Yongzhi (Alex) Wang

Assistant Professor of Strategic Management

Management & Human Resources

Yongzhi (Alex) is an assistant professor in Strategic Management. His research consists of two streams, covering competitive and cooperative strategies: platform-based competition and strategic alliances.

Sponsored by the Strategy Research Foundation, in his dissertation Alex studies mobile app developers as complementors of two dominant competing platforms: Apple's iOS, and Google's Android. His dissertation essays provide a holistic view of inter-platform and intra-platform competition among complementors, as well as the implications of complementors' strategic choices for platform competition. Theoretically, his dissertation draws upon and integrates the external views of industrial organization and network economies, and the internal views of firm capabilities and behavioral theory of the firm, to advance the platform literature. Empirically, Alex has put together a rich data set by combining archival and proprietary data sources. The data cover nearly the entire 2015 population of mobile app developers in both the iOS and Android platforms.

Regarding cooperative strategy, his review article on alliance capabilities, coauthored with his adviser Professor Nandini Rajagopalan, has been published in the Journal of Management. Building on the theory developed in the review article, he is working on an empirical research that integrates alliance capabilities with board of directors in the setting of international joint ventures.

Alex's research has won multiple awards, such as a 2015-2016 dissertation grant from the Strategy Research Foundation, one of eight finalists of the 2017 INFORMS/Organization Science Best Dissertation Proposal Competition, the Innovation Theme Best Paper at the 2017 Hong Kong Special Conference of the Strategic Management Society, and a 2015 Phi Kappa Phi Student Recognition Award for research from University of Southern California.
