Fintech is a dynamic and rapidly scaling field that presents limitless opportunities that exist at this intersection of the finance and technology industries. Home to several of the world’s leading fintech experts, The Ohio State University and Fisher College of Business are dedicated to expanding boundaries and elevating this exciting and convergent area through research, business and community partnerships, experiential learning and education and beyond. Continued investment into better understanding and harnessing the capabilities of this growing field will help creating lasting impact within fintech, its workforce development and among the next generation of industry leaders.

Home to the fifth-largest financial services industry, Columbus is a natural fit for scalable understanding of fintech. The industry is key to the region’s economy and, as part of its modern land-grant mission, Ohio State is dedicated to serving as a fintech thought leader in all that it does — from research, to creating business and community partnerships, educating tomorrow’s leaders and building a talented and agile workforce.

Thanks to a generous gift from Fintech71, The Ohio State University and Fisher College of Business have hosted and launched the following events and initiatives in the fintech space.

  • Open/Close Fintech @ Ohio State & Beyond Conference

    Join The Ohio State University and the Max M. Fisher College of Business for the second Fintech @ Ohio State & Beyond Conference, a deep dive into a better understanding of the advancement and applied work of fintech and emerging finance technologies.

    Learn about the latest research and analysis from Ohio State and Fisher’s globally renowned faculty, gain industry insights from accomplished fintech leaders and meet the students preparing to become tomorrow’s fintech professionals.

    The Fintech @ Ohio State & Beyond Conference will feature panel discussions on a range of relevant topics including machine listening, the Central Ohio fintech landscape and the impact that Ohio State researchers and alumni are having in the industry.

  • Open/Close Student Fintech Innovation Competition

    The Student Fintech Innovation Competition encourages students to deepen their exploration and understanding of the industry, through hands-on experiences and project pitches ideas that advance finance-convergent concepts such as blockchain, artificial intelligence and machine learning.

  • Open/Close Fintech Immersion Program

    The Fintech Industry Immersion Program is a two-semester course series open to undergraduate students across the university that covers fundamental concepts and technological techniques applied in the sectors of finance. These concepts include topics such as:

    • Roboadvisors

    • Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning 


    During autumn semester, students acquire an understanding of industry terminology, concepts, and technologies used and their applications. In spring semester, students apply their knowledge with a hands-on capstone project with some of the leading initiatives/companies in Fintech space such as Ohio Blockchain Council, Standard Power, Upstart Inc, Grange Insurance, Huntington Bank, Campus Inc and Zayzoon Inc.

  • Open/Close Graduate micro-certification in Fintech Fundamentals (coming soon)

    The Fintech Fundamentals graduate micro-certification will consist of 4.5 credit hours and will provide introductory-level knowledge pertaining to the emerging technologies that organizations use to improve and automate the delivery of financial services. Those technologies include artificial intelligence, machine learning and blockchain. The financial services include mobile wallets and payment apps, crowdfunding platforms, cryptocurrency exchanges, stock trading, robo-advisors, mortgage services, insurance services and credit monitoring apps. The increasing frequency with which consumers are relying on fintech to access basic financial services (e.g., money transfers and payments, savings and investments, and budgeting and financial planning) has made fundamental knowledge of fintech desirable for a variety of occupations, job titles and industry sectors.
