Project THRIVE – Finance is a four-year comprehensive program that combines classroom curriculum with co-curricular opportunities to foster a more inclusive and thriving community of finance students that includes those who are first generation to attend college, those who are economically underprivileged, and those who bring different life experiences. To achieve this end, these scholars (with a minimum 3.0 GPA, typically 1st and 2nd year students) can expect to experience the following support system:
- 2 Credit Hour Class 2x a week: During Spring semester, students are required to take a course where they explore careers in Finance and learn to apply basic business concepts through experiential learning. Corporate sponsors actively serve as guest speakers and class will include tours of Corporate HQ and Operational facilities. In the past, students have met with employees from companies such as Amazon, Big Lots, Google, Jefferies, KeyBank, Microsoft, Procter & Gamble, Tesla, and Wendy's. On Fridays, Finance and Accounting THRIVE students come together for a joint class to build community and develop life/career skills.
- Networking events: Students network with corporate sponsors and Fisher faculty, staff, and alumni in annual events such as the fall welcome reception, homecoming social mixer, and spring achievement celebration.
- Business attire: Students are fitted for their first formal business suit, to be used in interviews and networking events.
- Community outreach participation: Students are required to annually participate in community outreach activities such as JA-In-A-Day (a Junior Achievement event) where they teach financial literacy at a local elementary school in an underserved community.
- Advising / Tutoring services: Students have access to one-on-one advising and tutoring services.
- Scholarship opportunities (in development): Students have the opportunity to apply for annual renewable scholarships.
- Business library (in development): Students have access to a library of business-related textbooks that allow them to borrow and return needed textbooks each semester.
- Targeted Internships (in development): Working with Corporate partners, students will have unique opportunities to work alongside business professionals, early in their academic careers. These experiences will be designed with this Program in mind and be supported by our THRIVE mentors and instructors.
Prospective students can apply early in Fall semester and upon acceptance will schedule the course for Spring. While the course is only taken one time, our Program continues to stay connected with our students all 4 years, scaling the opportunities and experience.
Please reach out to our Program Directors: Chad Zipfel (Zipfel.4@osu.edu) or Steve Salopek (Salopek.5@osu.edu) for more information.
We couldn't deliver all the above benefits to our students without Company sponsorships. Our THRIVE program is very appreciative to have the financial support of many companies and we are always open to having new conversations. Special thanks to Big Lots, KeyBank, Procter & Gamble, and Wendy's for their financial support in the past. We are also very excited to welcome in our new flagship sponsor: J.M. Smucker Company!!
