Meet the Fisher students behind Patched, a brand that is focused on ending the stigma about mental health. Created as a student project, Patched, through its merchandise and events, is connecting allies of mental health awareness at Ohio State to make a difference.

In 2014, The Ohio State University’s Integrated Business and Engineering Honors program — one of the first interdisciplinary programs at Ohio State — recruited its first cohort of students. Since then, the program has produced highly sought-after graduates with both engineering skills and business acumen, creating an alumni network that spans from New York City to Silicon Valley and beyond.

Technology functions are now inherent in nearly every company, and competition for talent has no borders. Even so, students are not necessarily leaving Central Ohio en masse to work at places like Facebook and Google. Jeff Rice, executive director of Fisher's Office of Career Management, says many Fisher students interested in the tech industry are staying in Central Ohio and getting hired at companies such as Nationwide, Huntington and JPMorgan Chase, among others.

Assistant Dean and Chief Diversity Officer Cynthia Turner has always been a trailblazer. In 1996 she became the first African-American woman to earn a PhD in accounting from The Ohio State University and now, more than 20 years later, she is the first such woman to be named to the dean’s leadership team at Fisher in its recorded history.

Integration Fridays underscore the goal of one of the newest features of Fisher’s redesigned Full-Time MBA (FTMBA) program. First-year students in the program utilize their core courses during the week to learn functional knowledge, and on Fridays, they gather for weekly activities — organized by faculty members representing multiple functional areas— that highlight the interactions between these core functions.

For more than a decade, Fisher College of Business and KeyBank have teamed up to provide high-achieving, diverse undergraduate students from colleges and universities across the country with a unique opportunity to grow as leaders. Being fluid, nimble and open to suggestion are critical skills for any entrepreneur — just ask Kai McKinney and the rest of the team behind Helm, a startup created by a group of Ohio State students with the support of the Keenan Center for Entrepreneurship.

KeyBank leaders joined faculty, staff and students at The Ohio State University Max M. Fisher College of Business faculty to host 37 students from 22 different universities for the 12th annual KeyBank and Fisher College of Business Leadership and Creativity Undergraduate Student Symposium.

Aaron Westbrook decided, back when he was a high school student in New Albany, that he could develop a better prosthetic arm than the one he received when he turned 14. Now a sophomore at Fisher, Westbrook started Form5 Prosthetics, a nonprofit to make more economical and easier-to-use artificial limbs.

Each year approximately 1,000 Fisher students, faculty and staff unite in a day of service to bring positive change and lasting impact to the community in which we live, work and play. Fisher Impact Day is a collective expression of the power of servant leadership — an opportunity for the college community to showcase the passion, energy and engagement to not only do well, but to do good.

Attracting the best and brightest accounting minds — no matter their undergraduate training — is at the heart of a change in outreach and recruiting efforts in Fisher’s Master of Accounting (MAcc) program. Effective immediately for candidates applying for autumn 2020, the MAcc program will begin accepting GRE scores for students applying to the renowned graduate accounting program.

Opportunity abounds for Aaron Westbrook, a central Ohio CEO who chose to be a business Buckeye.

When the idea to offer a customized course focused on data and analytics at Nationwide popped up on Jodi Abbate’s radar, she had two questions: did Nationwide associates want such a course and, if so, who could deliver one? Abbate turned to some familiar faces at Fisher and worked with its Executive Education team, to create the Analytics in Action Seminar Series, a year-long, custom data and analytics workshop at Nationwide.

Some companies use interns for drudgery such as filing, copying and collating with a little meaningful work sprinkled in. How about using them to brainstorm solutions to high-level business challenges? The Risk Institute at Ohio State works with companies such as Worldpay, Discover and Abbott Nutrition connect them with MBA and specialized master's students to develop ways to combat risk.

If a significant aspect of a student’s career search is “who you know,” then Fisher is providing a number of innovative ways to connect tomorrow’s business professionals with potential employers.

From sharing his story with Fisher students, to serving on the college’s Dean’s Advisory Council, to supporting graduate students through scholarships, Jesse Tyson’s (MBA '76) pride in his Ohio State roots is immense. Now, that legacy of engagement is a permanent part of the Fisher campus. Together with his wife, Cheryl, the family was recently honored for their generosity in the creation of the Cheryl and Jesse Tyson Diversity and Inclusion Suite.

Student Josh Wiseley avoided conflict and speaking up for himself upon his arrival at The Ohio State University. However, his experience with the Dean’s Leadership Academy through the Fisher Leadership Initiative helped him come out of his shell, discover self-confidence and embrace his ability to lead.
