Nationwide Insurance and Financial Services: Analytics in Action

At Ohio State Fisher College of Business, we define analytics excellence as a higher state of maturity where analytics plays a key strategic role in the business, elevating levels of performance and growth.
To achieve this level of excellence, the organization must build skills both individually and collectively. The goal is to develop a way of thinking and working with data that permeates the organization, and changes the way that people solve problems, and how they seize opportunities.
Analytics Excellence Framework
The Analytics Excellence framework serves to educate and explore the use of analytics to elevate insights and outcomes.
- Critical Thinking: What are the questions or hypothesis that need to be solved with data? How will the answers be used moving forward?
- Data: Where does the data exist today, and what will be the effort to find, cleanse and maintain the data moving forward?
- Modeling: What are the various types of models that can be used, and what are the applications of those models?
- Conveyance of Results: How can the result of the project be communicated to others, and how can insights be shared to drive actionable items?
Leveraging this framework to propel the organization along its journey provides a pathway to new learning and capabilities for associates and teams, and can also enhance their ability to work together to harness the power of analytics for the enterprise, and for its customers.
Learning Outcomes:
- Stimulate interest and awareness in data analytics
- Build recognition of the power and potential of “applied analytics”
- Drive curiosity around “what’s possible”
- Create a hunger to learn more, so they can do more
Program Offerings
In 2019, Nationwide's Controllership organization partnered with Fisher to deliver twelve, 2-hour, monthly sessions surrounding analytics. These sessions are conveniently offered at Nationwide, presented by Fisher faculty. These seminars combine theory with application, and leverage the analytics excellence framework.
This program will be conducted at Nationwide across eight consecutive weeks, both virtually and in-person. The participants will be divided between two groups (Intermediate and Advanced) and will partner with OSU to produce solutions to Controllership data and analytics problems. Each weekly session will last between one and three hours in a classroom setting with an additional three hour time commitment per week to complete session prework and partner with Controllership associates to develop solutions to the provided problem statements. At the conclusion of the sessions, teams will present their projects to the other participants and leaders.
