Interim President, former Fisher dean Joseph Alutto honored

Joseph AluttoThe Ohio State University’s leader served as the guest of honor during a gathering of the Fisher College of Business community to celebrate his enduring legacy as well as the creation of The Joseph A. Alutto Chair in Leadership Effectiveness and the Joseph A. Alutto Global Leadership Fund.

Ohio State Interim President Alutto, who served as the university’s executive vice president and provost for six years and dean of Fisher for 16 years, reinforced to the crowd of family, friends, faculty and staff the importance of studying leadership and providing international opportunities for students. For more on Alutto’s thoughts on leadership and global learning, view the video below:

The leadership effectiveness and global leadership funds were created in honor of Alutto. Along with serving as a senior leader at Ohio State, he led Fisher through a period of great transformation, resulting in its reputation as a top business school as well as the construction of a state-of-the-art, six building campus named for college benefactor Max M. Fisher.

Through it all, said colleagues and friends, his focus remained on people — encouraging and celebrating the best of students, faculty and staff.

“When you hear ‘Joe Alutto,’ the words you say immediately are ‘transformational leader,’” said Christine A. Poon, dean and John W. Berry Sr. Chair in Business at Fisher. “Joe’s leadership is really the lessons of the character of a leader — integrity, humility, an ability to connect with people, and a person who always takes the time to mentor and advise.”

Added Fisher’s Senior Associate Dean Anil Makhija: “Joe believed in, cared about and invested in people and programs . . . His legacy is indelible.”

The Joseph A. Alutto Chair in Leadership Effectiveness will be held by a faculty member in one of Fisher’s five academic departments to support the systematic exploration of knowledge about and approaches to effective leadership in public and private sector settings. The Joseph A. Alutto Global Leadership Fund will help ensure that Fisher students have opportunities to engage in critical, action-based learning experiences around the world.
