Qualified applications received by the Initial Placement Deadline (IPD) will be evaluated among a smaller pool of candidates and are more likely to receive priority placement. While this makes IPD applicants initially more competitive, it does not guarantee placement in a preferred location for all IPD applicants, as projects are limited, and individual skills are taken into account. Please note that stronger candidates who miss the IPD are still very much encouraged to apply up to the Final Application Deadline in January! Updates on project locations that have reached their capacity will be posted on the website.

Students should prepare by having 1-credit hour available in the semester before departure for this course. Credit hour petitions are available, however, difficult and rare to receive.
- Online via Zoom (details to come)
- The class teaches students about the dynamics of doing business globally, the resources used for project management, and the understanding of location-specific cultures alongside health/safety concerns. Students cannot self-enroll, however, please leave room in your spring schedule to accommodate this 1-credit hour course.
International Students
CPT documentation is typically required for all international students (see FAQ section below) to complete a global internship within the United States, but CPT documentation is typically not required for international students (see FAQ section below) to complete a global internship outside of the United States. Enrollment in this summer course will also require payment of any tuition fees. View a list of tuition fees.
Additionally, all international students should be aware that their entry/exit requirements for the country of their global internship may differ than the entry/exit requirements for US passport holders. This program guarantees each accepted student a placement in an unpaid internship (5 days per week during company's normal office hours) with a company, organization, or government agency relevant to your academic interest.
- This process is a rolling process, the sooner you apply, get accepted and pay your deposit, the sooner the internship placement process begins.
PLACEMENT PROCESS
Each student will go through the following steps to be placed into an internship. Understand that the information provided in the program application will be shared with companies who make the final decision whether or not to host a particular student.
- Receive Acceptance into Program
- Pay Program Deposit (non-refundable)
- Deposit payment is due within 2 weeks of acceptance into the program
- Initial Placement Interview will be conducted on campus or via skype after acceptance into the program. The interview will be with the Placement Team. Every effort will be made to provide you the optimal internship experience. It will be very important to concisely describe to the Placement Team the kind of internship experience you seek. Be very realistic about your expectations to be placed in certain kinds of internship positions if you have little or no direct work experience. Be sure to research your selected location, industries of interest, and ideal internship position before your interview!
- The placement teams partner with the Office of Global Business to facilitate the internship placements, in-country logistics, and provide the in-country experience.
- The placement team carefully matches students' skillsets with internship position descriptions. They share the students' resumes with various companies that match the students' requested profile and the company then decides who they will hire.
- The placement teams partner with the Office of Global Business to facilitate the internship placements, in-country logistics, and provide the in-country experience.
- Resume sent to multiple companies
- Final Program Fee and OIA Fee Payment
- After your Initial Placement Interview, you may be asked to conduct a company interview as well. The Placement Team will be in touch with you to confirm interview details. Not every company requires an interview with the student and that is not out of the ordinary - again this depends on the host company and its processes.
- Details regarding your Internship Placement will be disclosed as soon as possible. The placement process and timeline varies student to student and is dependent on the host companies' timeline. Please do not worry if another student has information on a placement but you have not yet heard.
PLACEMENT DISCLOSURE
While we guarantee you a meaningful business internship, you must be realistic about the level of internship in which you will be placed. If you have limited or no work experience, no specialization coursed completed, limited leadership experience, or other kinds of business-related activities, you will be matched with an entry-level position in your requested discipline and industry.
TESTIMONIAL ABOUT THE PLACEMENT PROCESS
Q: "What is the difference between the initial placement deadline and the final deadline?"
A: Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis after the initial placement deadline (IPD). The IPD allows students to be considered for all locations they list as preferences in their application. Team slots will begin to fill in each project location after the IPD. Students who apply later will have fewer project options. Applications will no longer be considered after the final deadline.
Q: "When will I receive a decision letter?"
A: Some students can expect an application decision about four weeks after the IPD, but all students will receive an application decision by the final decision date in the end of January.
Q: "What if I don’t speak the native language of the country I want to go to?"
A: No language other than English is required for any location, but having some skill in the local language will make students more competitive to be selected for that location.
Q: "Will airfare be included in the program fee?"
A: For the Fisher Global Internships (FGI) program, airfare will NOT be included. Students accepted into the program will be responsible for their own airfare.
Q: "Do I self-enroll in the second session spring semester course?"
A: No, the Office of Global Business will automatically enroll after your acceptance into the program.
Q: "Would a Fisher Global Internship be similar to a 9-5 internship in terms of work balance?"
A: The Fisher Global Internship program aims to give students a work experience opportunity matched according to their interests in project work and industry. Therefore, the goal for the internship program is to give students relevant work experience which includes a work balance similar to a 9-5 internship and being expected to work ~40 hours per week. However, specific countries’ work hours may vary due to time zones.
Q: "How does housing work once in-country? Do students have to rent their own apartment, or will Ohio State / Office of Global Business provide housing for them?"
A: Upon being accepted in the program, the program fee students pay, depending on their location of choice, will include housing / shared accommodations near the city center, with a 24-hour resident director in the country to help during the process. The housing is typically shared apartments, or student dorms, with a kitchenette area. Students will be rooming with other OSU students on the program (no non-OSU roommates) and all OSU students will be in the same complex, though not necessarily on the same floor.
Q: "Does OSU / Office of Global Business help students with transportation once in country, and if not, how will that work?"
A: The program fee covers housing, shared accommodations, the internship placement, in-country activities, program orientation, and transfer from airport to housing, it does not cover costs associated with transportation in-city.
Q: "How competitive is the application process for the Fisher Global Internships program?"
A: When reviewing applications for Fisher Global Internships (FGI), we conduct a holistic approach and consider multiple factors, including the student’s resume, GPA, essay response, and work experiences.
Q: "What company will I be working for in my preferred location?"
A: Students who are admitted into the program will not know what company they will be assigned to until after going through the placement process with the in-country provider. Company assignments are based on major, qualifications, and if one has previous work/internship experience.
Q: "As an international student, will I be required to complete CPT paperwork?"
A: Yes, unless you have a qualifying exception. More information about CPT paperwork can be found on the International Student Resources page. Below are all situations in which students may need to complete CPT paperwork:
Situation | Is CPT Required? |
---|---|
Student inside of US, working for US company | Yes, CPT required |
Student outside of US, working for US company | No, CPT not required |
Student outside of US, working for non-US company | No, CPT not required |
Student outside of US who does not have an active SEVIS record, working for a US or non-US company | No, CPT not required |
Q: "As an international student, am I required to take coursework during the internship?"
A: Yes, international students requiring CPT must enroll in the 0.5-credit hour BA 2191 course offered through the Office of Career Management during the term in which they are interning. Tuition fees will apply which are not covered by the program fee, and students are encouraged to plan accordingly and speak with their academic advisors before applying to the program.
Q: "I am currently scheduled for 18 credit-hours. Will I be able to add the 1 credit-hour BUSADM 4189 course to my schedule?"
A: Yes, students at 18 credit-hours just need to submit a credit-hour appeal with their academic advisor once accepted into the program. The Office of Global Business will add accepted students into the BUSADM 4189 course (students cannot add themselves). The additional credit hour may impact tuition costs, and students are encouraged to meet with their academic advisor and review the Student Tuition and Fee Tables on the Registrar website to determine the actual impact on tuition.
Q: "Am I able to pay the program fee in installments?"
A: No, your deposit is due two weeks from your acceptance letter. However, your final program fee is due by the date listed in your acceptance letter or by the final payment due date listed on the website (whichever one is later). The final payment due date is listed on the website when applications open in August. This is so students who are serious about committing to the program can begin preparing for finances early on. If you are accepted and committed to the program early, the payment portal will allow you to make payments in installments. However, you must complete your final installment by the final payment due date listed on the website.
Q: "Am I able to pay the program fee with money from a 529 account?"
A: Yes, payment with a 529 account is accepted and must be done via check through the following steps:
