Do you have...?

• Minimum 1 full year as a university student - You must be at least a second-year student at the time of application; freshmen are not eligible to apply.
• GPA of 2.75 or greater - First-semester transfer students are welcome to apply, but you must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA by the end of the Autumn term in order to remain eligible for the program.
• English Language Proficiency - TOEFL Score of 90 or above preferred for international students.
• Good Standing with the Office of Student Conduct
• Enrolled OSU student status throughout the duration of the program - This program is not available to graduating seniors.
• CPT Approval - International students on an F-1 visa typically require CPT approval to participate in this program.
• Valid Passport - A passport is not required for application, but you must have a passport at the time of the visa application for departure, whichever comes first.

• There are four parts of the application including a questionnaire, resume, advising report, and video submission.

Program Fees

The program fee covers the company placement sourcing, resume support, program orientation, and ongoing communication support. It does not cover costs associated with internship equipment, software, or internet connection. Students accepted into the program will be responsible for their own computer equipment and internet connection.

Pre-Departure Course

• BUSADM 4189, Advanced Field Study: All students admitted into the FGI Virtual program will be required to take a one-credit class during the second half of the semester (7-week session) before their internship. Students should prepare by having 1-credit hour available in their course schedule for the semester before their internship. Credit hour petitions are NOT allowed.

  • The class teaches students about the dynamics of doing business globally, the resources used for project management, and the understanding of location-specific cultures alongside health/safety concerns. Students cannot self-enroll, however, please leave room in your semester schedule to accommodate this 1-credit hour course.

International Students

CPT documentation is typically required for international students (see FAQ section below) to complete a virtual global internship. For summer virtual global internships, international students may also be required to enroll in the 0.5 credit-hour BA 2191.02 course to maintain student eligibility. Enrollment in this summer course will also require payment of any tuition fees. View a list of tuition fees.

Each student will go through the following steps to be placed into an internship. Understand that the information provided in the program application will be shared with companies who make the final decision whether or not to host a particular student. Just as you are "shopping around" for a company, companies are "shopping around" for interns!

1. You Receive Acceptance into the Program
2. You Pay the Program Deposit (non-refundable)
   • Deposit payment is due within 2 weeks of acceptance into the program.
3. You Begin the Placement Documentation Process
   • Your in-country partner supporting you with the placement sourcing will contact you via email. They may require you to submit documents (e.g., Letter of Interest, Career Development Assessment Form), to revise your resume, and/or to speak with them through an Initial Placement Interview.
   • If you have an Initial Placement Interview, it will be conducted online through a video conference meeting after acceptance into the program and payment of program deposit. The interview will be with the in-country partner's placement team.
   • Every effort will be made by the in-country partner to provide you the optimal internship experience. In order to help them do this, it will be very important to concisely describe to the placement team the kind of internship experience you are seeking.
4. You Make the Final Program Fee Payment
5. In-Country Partner carefully crafts your skillsets, knowledge, experience and interests into a student profile.
6. In-Country Partner matches your student profile with internship position descriptions from potential host companies.
   • The placement team may share your student profile and resume with various companies - sometimes more than 100! - all of whom will evaluate your student profile alongside other competing interns.
7. After the Placement Documentation Process and/or Initial Placement Interview, you may be asked to conduct a Company Interview, as well.
   • The placement team will be in touch with you to confirm interview details. Not every company requires an interview with the student and that is not out of the ordinary - this depends on the host company and its processes.
8. You Make the OIA Fee Payment
9. You Receive an Internship Agreement / Offer Letter
   • The in-country partner will disclose details regarding your internship placement as soon as possible.
   • The placement process and timeline varies student to student and is dependent on the host companies' timeline. 

PLACEMENT DISCLOSURE

While we guarantee you a meaningful internship, you must be realistic about the level of internship in which you will be placed. If you have limited or no work experience, no specialization coursework completed, limited leadership experience, or lack other industry-related activities, you will be matched with an entry-level position in your requested discipline, though not necessary within a specific industry.

Please note that the Virtual Fisher Global Internships program generally places students with small- to medium-sized companies.

TESTIMONIAL ABOUT THE PLACEMENT PROCESS

Q: "When will I receive a decision letter?"

A: All students will receive an application decision by the final decision date (the end of October for Spring interns; the end of January for Summer/Autumn interns).

Q: "What if I don’t speak the native language of the country where my company is headquartered?"

A: No language other than English is required for any location for this program, but having some skill in the local language might make the student more competitive for the program.

Q: "Do I self-enroll in the second session semester course?"

A: No, the Office of Global Business will automatically enroll after your acceptance into the program.

Q: “Will I have to work during the business hours of my host company, even if they are multiple time zones ahead or behind?”

A: No, students will not be expected to work the exact business hours of their host company. Internships are project-based, and students will communicate their availability to their internship companies. Supervisors will typically request multiple check-in meetings each week, which may be in the early morning or late at night for the intern.   

Q: “What if I am open to being placed with a company in multiple countries? Do I have to select one country?”

A: Students do not have to select one country if they are open to potential placements in multiple countries. Since there are no flight or in-country logistical considerations, students can have their resume and profile circulated to companies in multiple countries at once to find the best possible internship placement. Locations will be restricted to the geographic regions offered by the in-country partner that helps with internship placements.

Q: As an international student, will I be required to complete CPT paperwork?

A: Yes, unless you have a qualifying exception. More information about CPT paperwork can be found on the International Student Resources page. Below are all situations in which students may need to complete CPT paperwork:

Q: "Am I able to pay the program fee in installments?" 

A: No, your deposit is due two weeks from your acceptance letter. However, your final program fee is due by the date listed in your acceptance letter or by the final payment due date listed on the website (whichever one is later). The final payment due date is listed on the website when applications open in August. This is so students who are serious about committing to the program can begin preparing for finances early on. If you are accepted and committed to the program early, the payment portal will allow you to make payments in installments. However, you must complete your final installment by the final payment due date listed on the website. 

Q: "Am I able to pay the program fee with money from a 529 account?"

A: Yes, payment with a 529 account is accepted and must be done via check through the following steps:
