Brazil recently passed the UK to be the world's sixth largest economy. With a population of over 200 million, it is the second largest nation in the western hemisphere and the largest country in South America and the Latin American region both in population and geographical area. A member of BRIC, the economy of this resource-rich nation was booming until 2010. Currently experiencing a slowdown, Brazil has some issues to overcome: falling commodities prices, wide spread corruption, a growing debt-to-GDP ratio. The Spring Semester, Session One class will cover these and other business, government, legal and cultural challenges facing Brazil as it prepares for the 2016 Olympics, and fights to fulfill its potential and take its place as a global economic power.
The Spring Break travel will take students to Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. There will be site visits to a number of US-based organizations with Brazilian offices including manufacturers, banks, and consulting firms, as well as a multitude of cultural, historical and tourist stops. Join David Wilson, a Fisher/Moritz graduate, for a fascinating view of this dynamic and captivating country.
