Research Distinction

Fisher students with an interest in research have the opportunity to pursue a faculty-guided, year-long project culminating in an undergraduate thesis. Students who complete this experience graduate with a research distinction noted on their diploma—either “with research distinction” or, for students in an honors program, “with honors research distinction.”

Over the course of their senior year, students will complete a structured, faculty-guided research experience that includes:

  • Designing and conducting an independent research project
  • Working closely with a faculty advisor
  • Enrolling in research coursework across two semesters
  • Presenting your work at the Denman Undergraduate Research Forum (if accepted)
  • Completing a written thesis and oral defense

Research within or outside of Fisher

Students may complete their research either within Fisher College of Business or in another academic area at Ohio State. For research outside of Fisher, students are encouraged to pursue research in an area of the university where they have a major or minor and therefore have the necessary background to complete a research project.

Eligibility requirements vary slightly depending on the research path. View the table below for details:

 Research DistinctionHonors Research Distinction
Within FisherStudents must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 to begin a research distinction project and earn a GPA of 3.65 across the 6 graded research hours.Students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.5 and 12 hours of honors coursework to begin an honors distinction project if completing graded research hours.
Outside of FisherStudents must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 to begin a research distinction project and earn a grade of S if completing S/U research hours. Students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.5 and 18 hours of honors coursework to begin an honors distinction project if completing S/U research hours.

Identifying a research area and faculty advisor

Getting started with research begins by identifying an area of interest and connecting with a faculty advisor. Students are encouraged to explore potential topics early in their undergraduate experience by:

Once you’ve identified an area of interest, the next step is to reach out to faculty members whose work aligns with your goals. Research projects may be completed within or outside of business, depending on your academic background. When contacting faculty:

  • Be clear and professional in your communication
  • Share your interests and relevant experience
  • Be prepared to provide your resume and academic information
  • Allow time for responses and follow up as needed

Application and proposal requirements

To be eligible for a research distinction, students must submit an application prior to their senior year. Applications are due August 1 and include:

  • A confirmed faculty advisor
  • A brief research proposal (1–2 pages)
  • Required approvals from your advisor and department

The proposal should outline your research topic, objectives and overall approach. While your project may evolve over time, this initial proposal helps establish direction and ensure your project is feasible within your senior year.

Applications are reviewed to confirm readiness and alignment with program requirements. Students are encouraged to connect with an honors advisor in advance to discuss their plans and ensure they are on track.

Because the research experience spans the full academic year and includes participation in the Denman Undergraduate Research Forum, students should plan to graduate in spring or summer.

Research requirements

All students must meet several requirements to actually be certified to graduate with research distinction. The following requirements are in addition to the GPA criteria, previous honors coursework and application listed above.

  • Students complete a minimum of 6 credit hours of research coursework across two semesters (typically autumn and spring) in the department of their faculty advisor. Coursework is completed under the guidance of that advisor and supports the development of the student’s research project.
  • Students are required to apply to the Denman Undergraduate Research Forum, held each spring. If accepted, students will present their research as part of this university-wide event.
  • Students complete a faculty-guided undergraduate thesis (typically 35+ pages) that presents their research question, approach and findings, and must submit the final version to the Knowledge Bank upon approval.
  • Students must complete an oral defense of their research project and thesis before a faculty committee. This typically includes a formal presentation followed by questions and discussion.

Graduation and certification requirements

Students must indicate their intent to complete research distinction when submitting their application to graduate. Final certification occurs during the student’s last semester and is based on successful completion of all program requirements. This includes:

  • Meeting required GPA standards (which vary by distinction)
  • Completing approved research coursework across two semesters
  • Conducting a faculty-guided research project
  • Applying to and participating in the Denman Undergraduate Research Forum (if accepted)
  • Submitting a final thesis to the Knowledge Bank
  • Successfully completing an oral defense and submitting all required documentation

Students who meet these requirements will be certified to graduate with research distinction or honors research distinction, as indicated on their application to graduate.

Failure to complete all requirements by university deadlines may result in graduating without distinction.
