Why did you decide to pursue an MBOE?
I've spent the past 2 1/2 years working closely with the MBOE program as the recruitment and admissions specialist. First, I had direct knowledge of the incredible faculty and staff associated with the program. They do a good job of balancing theoretical learning with real world application, while making sure we have the resources we need to succeed. Second, I already have my masters in higher education and a 2 year old son at home. As a result, the 13-month in-person format with 8 sessions made it an ideal fit.

Despite considering a more traditional MBA, such as Fisher's Working Professionals MBA, I opted to apply for the MBOE program. The curriculum really spoke to me as being a unique education that could be leveraged in any industry. There aren't many education professionals trained in business operations, continuous improvement, or lean six sigma. Additionally, the leadership curriculum in combination with operations seemed like a perfect foundation to prepare me for future leadership positions. I have no doubt the program will be a real differentiator for me as I look to advance my career in the coming years.

Lastly, I hopeful MBOE can prepare me for starting my own company in the near future.

Why did you decide to pursue an MBOE?
I decided to pursue a MBOE degree because I genuinely wanted to invest in myself and my own professional growth. I was at a crossroads of deciding what my next step in my learning journey would be and was actually torn between a Doctorate in Nursing or an MBA. At the time I was truly leaning more toward an MBA route. I went and talked to one of my senior administrators who actually recommended I look into this specific program. I talked to a few peers that had also gone through this program and it was a pretty easy decision from there. Everything about the program curriculum make me feel uncomfortable and are a true challenge for me to understand- but it is within this stage of "uncomfortable" that growth occurs.
Why did you choose the Fisher MBOE program? What sets it apart from other programs you looked at?
I took advantage of a day to observe a MBOE lecture class in action in the early spring of 2023. I had the opportunity to participate in some class activities and also talked with current students within the program that day. EVERYONE had nothing but amazing things to say about the program. Also, each of them could easily speak to the things they had learned thus far that they were already applying into their own daily leadership practice. I think the faculty and staff really set this program apart from others I had looked into that offered similar learnings. They really take the time to get to know you. I also love that they keep the class/cohort rather small and intimate. I feel honored to be in a class with such amazing professional talent that I have the opportunity to learn from and build a peer network with. As a particularly special bonus, I can honestly say that I have developed some lifelong friendships with my classmates that I will cherish forever.
What is your ultimate long-term professional goal and how will the MBOE program help you achieve this?

Why did you decide to pursue an MBOE?
In my full-time professional role with Guidehouse, my day-to-day focus is on solving complex challenges for state agencies, counties, cities, public university systems, and other public sector entities through change management, business resiliency, and technology-driven innovation. The Ohio State University’s Master of Business Operational Excellence (MBOE) is an opportunity to expand my skill set in driving transformational change, both internally and for clients. Expanding my network is another key reason for why I decided to pursue an MBOE. Getting to know and learn from classmates from different industries and backgrounds is indeed a part of the learning journey. Understanding how other organizations and companies address challenges and manage processes can be instructive. As I write this, Cohort 16 has completed two sessions (out of eight), and I’ve already developed friendships and have enjoyed getting to know my peers. Finally, continuously building skills and learning new ideas is how I live my life. The MBOE Program is an opportunity to learn and grow, both personally and professionally.
Why did you choose the Fisher MBOE program? What sets it apart from other programs you looked at?
When I reviewed the curriculum for the MBOE program, I knew it was likely the best fit for me. The Lean Six Sigma certification is highly recognized in my profession and becoming proficient in process improvement methodology will provide a new set of tools for my client work. My clients often include entities like state agencies, hospitals, towns, and nonprofit organizations. The more effective I can be at delivering results, the faster and more effectively my clients can produce results for their constituents and communities; and these are typically critical services, such as expanding broadband access to rural areas or providing housing-related support to low-income families. The MBOE program is set up to where my classmates and I learn by doing (through workshops and site visits), and we can immediately apply what we’re learning to our professional work. It’s practical and that’s what sets the MBOE program apart from other programs.
What is your ultimate long-term professional goal and how will the MBOE program help you achieve this?
The reason I work hard at what I do professionally is because my colleagues and I are working on projects that are bettering the lives of people in communities across the country. Long-term, my focus will continue to be on finding ways to do the same. This could include serving in government. From my previous stint in government, I can confidently say that building operational excellence systems, driving decisions with data, and creating and sustaining change are all relevant areas for improving government operations and services. I know that the knowledge gained from the MBOE will make me a better public servant.
What advice would you give to a student looking to enter an MBOE program?
If you’re reading this and you’re a prospective student, the time commitment and the capstone project will need buy-in from your employer, so gaining the support needed and having any necessary discussions early in the application process will be helpful. If you’re looking to hone your management skills; enhance your understanding of complex challenges commonly encountered by businesses; and/or you want to become a more effective leader in driving transformational change at your company or organization, then I’d encourage you to consider the MBOE program. Plus, as an MBOE student, you’ll meet interesting people from around the country and make new friends and connections in the process.
