Executive Speakers For Services Class

Guest Speakers

In order to enhance student learning and provide networking opportunities, Marketing 843 has offered several Top Executive Speakers during Spring Quarter 2005. Special thanks to each of the speakers for this quarter, which have included:

Mike Bills, Fitch RPA

Jim Curphey, Porter Wright Morris & Arthur

His talk focused upon motivating employees in the professional service sector, from the perspective of a big law firm. He gave the class an in-depth overview of how big law firms tend to function and focused upon the differences between the model of a law firm versus a corporate model. For example, lawyers may have managerial responsibilities, but unlike other corporations, lawyers tend not to strive for those particular positions. Lawyers also tend to focus on their clients, rather than the "shareholders" as in other large corporations. In regards to motivating employees, Jim believed that job satisfaction was the key factor. Individuals need to be challenged by the work itself in order to be motivated to produce such high-quality work.
