How the Fisher MAcc Program is Helping Me Develop Soft Skills for My Career
Author: Brig Taylor, MAcc
When I started the Fisher MAcc Program at The Ohio State University, I expected to gain technical knowledge and expertise in accounting – which I have. What I didn’t anticipate, however, was how much emphasis the program would place on soft skills. These interpersonal and communication abilities are just as crucial in the professional world as technical skills. Through group projects, presentations, and networking opportunities, I’ve found that the Fisher MAcc program at The Ohio State University prepares me to excel (no pun intended) in accounting and thrive in any professional environment.
Why Soft Skills Matter in Accounting
One thing that has really stuck out to me this semester is that technical knowledge is only part of the job, with soft skills being the other part. When presenting financial reports to clients, collaborating with colleagues on a tight deadline, or even managing a team, soft communication skills, teamwork, and leadership skills are essential. The Fisher MAcc program has created a learning environment that develops these critical skills to prepare us for career success.
Group Projects: Mastering Teamwork and Communication
With such an emphasis on soft skills, group work is a significant part of the Fisher MAcc experience. Building teamwork and communication skills has been a game-changer for me. With virtually every class requiring group work, collaborating with classmates on case studies and presentations has taught me how to communicate effectively and adapt to different working styles. These experiences will help me academically and prepare me for the collaborative nature of the accounting profession.
Presentations: Building Confidence and Public Speaking Skills
Presentations have been another key way the MAcc program has helped me grow. Whether I’m presenting the results of a case study or explaining complex financial concepts, these assignments have pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me develop confidence in public speaking. The feedback I’ve received from professors and peers has been invaluable, and I know these experiences will serve me well when I’m presenting to clients or colleagues in the future.
Networking and Career Preparation: Honing Interpersonal Skills
Beyond the classroom, Fisher’s MAcc program offers numerous opportunities to build interpersonal skills. Numerous networking events, career fairs, and mock interviews have challenged me to step outside my comfort zone and granted me opportunities to engage with industry professionals. These experiences have improved my ability to present myself professionally and ask meaningful questions. I have noticed that my confidence has been strengthened in networking and building relationships in the accounting field.
Personal Growth Through Soft Skills
One of the Fisher MAcc program's most rewarding parts is seeing how much I’ve grown in just a short time. Group projects have taught me how to collaborate under pressure, presentations have improved my confidence, and networking events have helped me develop meaningful professional connections.
Final Thoughts
The Fisher MAcc program is about more than technical expertise—it’s about shaping well-rounded professionals prepared for future workplace challenges. My advice to prospective students? Don’t underestimate the value of soft skills. Embrace every group project, presentation, and networking event as a chance to grow because the lessons you’ll learn will stay with you long after graduation.
