Why the MAcc Program Was the Right Choice for Me

Before the MAcc Program

When I started my undergraduate journey at Ohio State, I knew I wanted to be an accounting major. However, the biggest question wasn’t what I wanted to do, but how I would get there, specifically, how to reach the 150 credit hours required for the CPA exam.

During my freshman year, I looked at every possible route, including the accelerated combined BSBA/MAcc, traditional MAcc, double majoring, and even just taking extra undergraduate credits. Ultimately, I chose to complete my undergraduate degree in four years and dedicate a fifth year to the MAcc program.

One of my deciding factors was the ability to gain experience. By choosing the five-year path, I created space to complete three public accounting internships: one in tax and two in audit (including a busy season). While it took a bit longer, the technical knowledge and professional confidence I gained during those internships have been invaluable in my current graduate curriculum.

Flexibility and Specialization:

One of the primary reasons I chose OSU’s MAcc program was the ability to tailor my education. Beyond the core requirements, the curriculum is incredibly flexible. I’ve been able to select electives that align specifically with my career goals and interests. This autonomy makes the workload feel less like "requirements" and more like "investments" in my future career.

More Than Just Accounting: The Network and Soft Skills

After completing my first semester and now moving into my second, I can see that the value of the program extends far beyond the classroom.

A Built-in Professional Network: Through group projects and shared coursework, I’ve built relationships with a cohort of like-minded peers who will soon be my colleagues in the field.

Supportive Mentorship: The faculty and staff are instructors and mentors. Whether through office hours or career advising, they are genuinely invested in our success.

Soft Skill Development: While the technical learning is a given, the program has challenged me to grow as a leader. It has helped me refine my leadership and soft skills.

Final Thoughts for Applicants

If you are weighing your options, think about what you want your professional foundation to look like. For me, the MAcc wasn't just about a credit count; it was about the bridge between being a student and becoming a professional. The combination of a flexible curriculum, a strong network, and the time to gain real-world experience has made this the perfect final chapter of my time at OSU.
