Starting Your MAcc on the Right Foot
Hello! My name is Luciano Millan, and I am a Master of Accounting student at The Ohio State University. I earned my undergraduate degree in finance and accounting from the University of Toledo, where I spent four memorable years attending sporting events, building friendships, and working hard in the classroom to develop a strong academic foundation.
I am excited to begin my journey as a Buckeye in the MAcc program and look forward to documenting the highlights, lessons, and experiences along the way through this blog and future posts.
Our MAcc class hit the ground running from the moment we arrived for orientation. Time moves very quickly during the first few weeks, and we find ourselves balancing classes, recruiting events, work, and any other responsibilities we may have.
Having all of that on your plate and seeing assignments start to pile up can certainly feel intimidating. However, it would be a shame to let that stress take away from your MAcc experience. Fortunately, there are ways to make the transition into the program much more manageable. Here are some recommendations that I believe will be helpful for incoming MAcc students:
1.Get to know your classmates
My classmates are one of my favorite parts of the MAcc program. Our class is full of students with incredibly different backgrounds, experiences, and personalities. This makes every conversation interesting, and it helps make class discussions more engaging. Getting to know your classmates also makes the program more enjoyable because you have friends who are going through many of the same experiences and challenges.
2. Disciplined Time Management
As I mentioned earlier, many responsibilities arise right at the beginning of the year while you are still adjusting to the new program. That is why disciplined and structured time management will be an important skill to develop early on. Being intentional with how you use your time will help you stay on top of your responsibilities without feeling overwhelmed and allow you to enjoy your time off the books.
3. Keep a Learning Attitude
The MAcc program is a great opportunity to learn both inside and outside of the classroom. You will be surrounded by classmates, professionals, and professors who challenge you in different ways and push you to expand your knowledge. Embrace those challenges and approach them with curiosity.
4. Take Advantage of Recruiting Opportunities
A great benefit of being a MAcc student at Ohio State is having access to the Office of Career Management. They organize many networking events and career fairs for students to meet professionals and learn about different companies and career paths. These events are a great way to build your network and get comfortable talking to professionals.
5. Make the Most of Your MAcc Experience
While the program is demanding, it is important to remember that your experience goes beyond just classes and recruiting. Take time to get involved, go to football games, hang out with friends, and enjoy everything that Ohio State has to offer. You are responsible for making your time in the MAcc program memorable, so own your experience and make the most of every opportunity you have along the way.
