MAcc Program Reflection
As my final year at The Ohio State University comes to an end, I reflect on my time in the MAcc program. Throughout this year, not only have I improved my technical skills and accounting knowledge, but I have also made connections, set boundaries for work life balance, and explored Columbus.
Cohort Connections
One of the most rewarding aspects of the program has been the community. The variety of classes, group assignments, and networking events allowed me to connect with peers in a way that goes beyond just being classmates. We have truly learned from one another. To celebrate our time together, our cohort’s MAcc Council recently organized a "Class Superlatives" event. It was a fun, lighthearted way to wrap up the year and a great last chance for everyone to bond before we walk across the stage at graduation. These friendships are the professional network I’ll carry with me throughout my career.
Establishing Balance
In my undergraduate years, I was intensely focused on academics. I often skipped social events to study, believing that more time at the desk always meant better results. While that dedication paid off, this year taught me a vital lesson, sometimes a much-needed break is actually the most productive thing you can do.
I used this year to establish work-life balance techniques that I plan to carry into my professional career this fall. I focused on allowing myself to take breaks and finding ways to balance the rigors of the program with personal time. By setting these boundaries now, I feel much more prepared for my upcoming audit position.
Exploring Columbus
One of the primary ways I found that balance was by finally exploring Columbus. Even though I’ve lived here for five years, I realized how much I had missed! This year, I made it a point to visit:
- Local Markets: Exploring North Market and Little Market.
- Green Spaces: Reconnecting with nature at the Franklin Park Conservatory and other parks around Columbus.
- Sports: Attending Blue Jackets and Columbus Clippers games.
Columbus has so much to offer, and I’m thrilled that I get to keep exploring it as I begin my full-time position here this fall.
Final Thoughts
To Future MAcc students, the program may be rigorous, but don’t forget to enjoy everything else that OSU and Columbus have to offer. The technical skills will prepare you for your career, but the relationships and balance you build here will sustain your career. Thank you, Fisher, for a great year.
Go Bucks!
