How the Fisher MAcc Program Prepares You for Accounting Recruiting from the Start
As a new graduate student at The Ohio State University, my journey started quickly. After arriving in Columbus, my fellow Fisher Graduate Students and I were welcomed with a three-day orientation the week before classes. This consisted of introductions, keynote speakers, an overview of the program, panels about the CPA and Big 4, and a reception. While there was a lot of information to absorb, the Fisher College of Business faculty and MAcc professors were well prepared and made the process seamless. For me, one of the biggest realizations during orientation was how immediate recruiting for accounting begins. Networking events, accounting career fairs, and coffee chats filled up my calendar for the first two weeks of school.
Despite everything going on, I was impressed with how many resources the MAcc program and Fisher College of Business had to offer. One of those unique resources was a designated MAcc career advisor. The advisor helped review my resume and create a plan of action to obtain the job and career I desired. I found this extremely beneficial and felt more confident going into the upcoming events. A big emphasis throughout the first couple weeks of classes was the network you will build and how to utilize it. Ohio State has so many great alumni who are willing to help and chat with you about your career.
The start of the second week of classes kicked off with OSU hosting the accounting career fair in the Ohio Union student center ballroom. This event was open to all students in the Fisher College of Business interested in a career in accounting. The career fair was an excellent opportunity for me to personally meet and talk with recruiters and current employees. Many of the largest and midsize firms including the Big 4 were in attendance, which helped me create valuable connections before the interview process. While you may not get a job or interview on the spot, the career fair allows you to gain a deeper understanding about each company, ask any questions you have, and for firms to match a face to your application/resume.
Concluding my second week of the semester, I can say that everything happens very fast from orientation to classes to recruiting events. At times it was difficult to balance everything between the new environment and new obligations. However, the MAcc program at Ohio State’s Fisher College of Business prepares you immensely and provides any resources you would need to pursue the career or job that you want. As the year goes on, I look forward to the many connections and network I will build during my time in the MAcc program.
