Thinking About Things a Little Differently
As a graduate student, you often worry about all the things on your to do list. You get overwhelmed very easily thinking of due dates, exams, work schedules, etc. You often feel you have too much on your plate with readings after readings and assignment after assignment. You often go to class with the mindset of, “When are we going to get out of here?” You frequently feel emotions and waves of depression wanting to be home surrounding by your family and friends. Several contemplations occur over and over again thinking how life could’ve been easier if you just took a different route.
I often had these feelings and thoughts especially being a first-generation graduate student. One night I attended class and I had a mind-changing experience. My professor said, “Think of these things as I get to do them, not I have to do them.” I reflected back on this one statement from that class on. I failed to realize how blessed I am to be a student sitting in a classroom at The Ohio State University. This chance could be a once in a lifetime opportunity. I get to be a student to further my education and develop my personal self while learning at such a prestigious institution. I want to enjoy and get my full experience while being a student here.
After making it halfway through my first semester, I really just want to keep putting my best self forward. I’ve been provided with this opportunity of meeting individuals from all different backgrounds and being able to share valuable experiences on an educational level as well as a personal level. The professors really care about our academic experience and wanting us to succeed. They provide us with great material in the classroom and applicable material to our field. The professors are considerate of our needs for the classroom and are always willing to help when necessary. Fisher’s professors are one of a kind and their efforts are unmatched.
I can really see how this journey will go by so fast. Some days it feels like I just started, and other days it feels like I’ve been away from my family for months. I would say to all students coming into the program can be very overwhelming, but I think it will pay off in the end. I have met some really great people so far along the way. I couldn’t be more thankful for this opportunity. From now on, I will try to be cautious in my choice of words. I don’t have to go to class. I get to go to class at a huge university and one of the best in the country. Not everyone gets to say those words and have the opportunity for that chance. I’m blessed far beyond words can describe.
As I sit outside on this beautiful Fall Day, I look forward to continuing my journey here at Fisher with a more positive mindset! I can do it and you can to!
