Lessons from my first term at Fisher

I completed my undergraduate coursework at Wittenberg University, a small liberal arts college with under 2,000 students.  Needless to say, some culture shock accompanied starting my graduate education in the MAcc program at a much larger Ohio State.  This overwhelming feeling quickly evaporated and I found my stride after a few weeks with Fisher thanks to a few key reasons:

First, the accessibility in the Masters courses at Fisher creates an unparalleled learning environment by combining the resources of a large university with more accessible professors and advising.  Ohio State uses an online platform Canvas that enables students to keep up with coursework easily. Through this software students view and complete assignments posted by professors and keep track of grades in real time.  This real time hub of information helps students manage the faster pace of coursework with ease.  In addition, all students are able to communicate with professors and capitalize on their accessibility.  Professors respond rapidly to email and update students through Canvas.  They also hold office hours throughout the week providing students with ample opportunity to ask questions and seek additional assistance on any coursework.

Another great resource for graduate students is the graduate lounge in Gerlach Hall.  Most courses take place in this hall so having a lounge there provides a great benefit for Fisher graduate students.  Access to a reserved space for students in the Masters programs takes stress out of finding a place to study between classes.  Additionally, many students use this space for a lunch break thanks to refrigerators, microwaves, and plenty of tables.

Finally, advising for Fisher graduate students keeps them up to date with scheduling classes and planning courses. Advisors from the department hold meetings before each semester to go over the upcoming class options and how to register without any snags.  This perk allows students to take full advantage of customizable elective coursework.  As a result, each student is able to take a unique path through their graduate program tailored toward classes that peak their interest and fit career goals.  Should you have additional questions an advisor will quickly respond via email or set up an appointment to meet with you!

All of these resources at Fisher College of Business set students up to thrive at Ohio State, regardless of their undergraduate background.  The accessibility to faculty and staff paired with the newest technology embody the culture of Fisher's top-ranking graduate programs.
