Classes Cancelled- Work Still Open

I used to be really excited about school being canceled. In fact, my high school was notorious for being canceled and it put Beaver Local on the map. If you are from the eastern part of Ohio, you have heard of Beaver Local.

But college is different, as you are paying for your education. You realize that a “day off” really means missed learning opportunities. You either have to learn the material on your own or your professor crams an extra lecture into the rest of the quarter. Some professors find material to take out, but this just makes you wonder why you were learning it in the first place! Either way, your education suffers.

On a positive note, we received an email from our Operations Management professor that an extra day at the end of the quarter was put into place for a review of materials, that allows to “hedge against uncertainties”. We will be moving each class ahead one day, so we will not be missing any class material!

And finally, although classes were canceled today, work continues. My position is considered “business critical” and we will only close if there is a level 3 snow emergency. Below is a description of the snow emergency levels from the Web site:

Snow Emergency Classifications

LEVEL 1: Roadways are hazardous with blowing and drifting snow. Roads may also be icy. Motorists are urged to drive very cautiously.

LEVEL 2: Roadways are hazardous with blowing and drifting snow. Roads may also be very icy. Only those who feel it is necessary to drive should be out on the roads. Contact your employer to see if you should report to work. Motorists should use extreme caution.

LEVEL 3: All roadways are closed to non-emergency personnel. No one should be driving during these conditions unless it is absolutely necessary to travel or a personal emergency exists. All employees should contact their employer to see if they should report to work. Those traveling on the roads may subject themselves to arrest.

Snow Day!

Well, I suppose not ‘technically’, but seeing as I have no classes or work on Fridays, tomorrow is a snow day for me! And just so you know, I did go to class tonight, despite my intuition. Here’s a picture of Fisher covered in snow. My work closed at 3:00 and since I had class at 6 and it would have been stupid of me to go home in between, I sat in Fisher and read for the next 3 classes. Woot for being ahead of the game! While I was reading, I took this picture! Fisher’s so pretty in the snow. I much prefer snow from the indoors, though I’m fairly certain I may be coerced by a certain fiance of mine to go sledding tomorrow.

This is when classes should have been cancelled.
This is when classes should have been canceled.

But on a positive note, all of my classes look like they should be quite educational and hopefully fun along the way. I’m actually interested in all of the subject matter. And, my internship project is beginning, so that should keep me busy!

Oh, before I forget – If you’re into running at all, you should consider running in the fisher 5K on April 25th. You can register here. All of the proceeds go towards a good cause – the Boys and Girls Club of Columbus.

Have a great night everyone, and stay safe out in the snow, whether you’re driving or romping around!
