More Than Networking: Reflections from Graduate Networking Night
One of the reasons I chose the Fisher College of Business for my Master’s in Human Resource Management was its strong alumni network and sense of community. From the very beginning of my journey, I have experienced how intentionally meaningful connections with peers, professors, and alumni are cultivated.
Recently, I attended the Graduate Student Networking Night organized by the Office of Career Management, and it was a powerful reminder of that commitment to community. The evening brought together students and alumni from HR, Finance, Accounting, and other fields, creating space for open and honest conversations about career paths and professional growth. In this blog, I would like to share a few of my reflections from the event.
What stood out to me most was how natural the conversations felt. Networking can sometimes feel formal or intimidating, but this evening confirmed that it does not have to be. Alumni were warm, approachable, and genuinely interested in hearing about our goals and experiences. Instead of focusing on having the perfect introduction or elevator pitch, I focused on asking thoughtful questions and listening closely. It reminded me that strong professional relationships are built on curiosity and authenticity.
I was also inspired by the honesty of the alumni who shared their journeys. They spoke openly about challenges, unexpected turns, and moments of doubt alongside their achievements. Hearing about their setbacks made their success feel real and attainable. It was reassuring to see that growth is more about resilience than perfection.
Lastly, I left the event feeling energized and grateful. Experiences like this remind me why I chose Fisher in the first place. Beyond classroom learning, it is the people and the shared willingness to support one another that make this community special. I am proud to be part of it and excited to continue building relationships that will shape my journey ahead.
