Why I Picked Fisher for Grad School- and Why You Should Too!

If you had told me my freshman year of high school that I, a native New Mexican still adjusting to Columbus interested in English and Education would one day be a graduate student at the Ohio State University at 21 years old, I likely would not have believed you. Ohio State initially was not on my radar for undergraduate school, let alone for a graduate program. Years later, however, choosing to be a Buckeye for both my undergraduate and graduate years has been one of my best life decisions.

Choosing a graduate school is difficult, let alone deciding whether or not to pursue further education at all. There were a few reasons I made the decision to get my Masters of Human Resource Management at Fisher, and why almost a third of the way through, I know I made the right choice.

  1. Fisher (and Ohio State's) resources are next to none. Whether it is the professors and staff who go the extra mile and draw from decades of industry and life experiences or the numerous career fairs, workshops and speaker series available, a student here has any resource they may need.
  2. The Fisher Campus has a welcome small-campus feel within an ever-larger Ohio State campus. Study spaces, modern buildings and classrooms, and a small yet collaborative environment are all part of what makes Fisher great, but knowing Ohio State's countless dining halls, libraries, gyms, and other buildings are within walking distance is a huge plus.
  3. Alumni and employer relationships here are tried and true. Fisher has a fantastic reputation among countless employers that recruit from our graduate programs. Whether you want to work for a local/global, small/large, for-profit/not-for-profit, organization or simply want to keep your options open, Fisher has alumni, faculty, and frequently-visiting employers that will guide you towards your dream job post-graduation.
  4. Community and Collaboration: Fisher creates a collaborative culture where students support each other academically and professionally. Group projects, team-building, networking and more provide constant opportunities to connect with peers who quickly become valuable contacts and lifelong friends. The sense of community here makes even a rigorous graduate program feel both fulfilling and manageable.
  5. Real World Exposure: One of Fisher's strengths that I recognized while studying here during my undergrad was its emphasis on hands-on learning. In graduate school, this is even more true, with case competitions, high-level projects, and partnerships with major companies where students can learn in real-world settings. Whether you are an MBA student or MHRM student, you will gain practical experience that goes beyond the classroom.
