The Core Classes in the Fisher MAcc Program
Hi everyone!
With my first blog post of the new semester, I wanted to take the chance to talk about three core classes that all students are required to take in the Fisher MAcc Program!
ACCTMIS 6001: Accounting Data and Analytics. In this class, we learned how to combine accounting elements and apply them to large data sets to solve complex problems. Our professor told us that the role of an accountant is changing, and that in a world where there is a greater reliance on technology and having more access to data than ever, our ability to use data analytics with our accounting background could define our career. This class has a lot of Excel, Tableau, and Power BI labs that you will have to do, but it sets you up to have a far greater understanding of how to utilize these tools in the future. Our final project was a presentation to Pwc associates where we answered our own research question and used data analytics to support our conclusions.
ACCTMIS 6200: Financial Reporting. For any accounting majors that are reading this post, think of this class as a crash course through all of your financial accounting classes. Throughout the seven weeks in this class, expect to look at numerous financial statements of real companies and be able to apply them to financial accounting concepts you have learned in you undergrad experience. For many students that are looking to take the CPA, this class does a great job in giving you an idea of what the FAR(Financial Accounting and Reporting) section of the test will look like.
ACCTMIS 6202: Accounting Policy and Research. This class is a little different than the other two that I have mentioned. In this class there is a lot of reading of academic research related to how certain events affect the stock price of a company. If you consider yourself a strong writer, this is the class for you. This class challenges myself and my classmates to think outside the box and focus on higher level thinking while writing papers on the academic research we read outside of class. This course culminates into a final project where groups come together and do their own research on how a certain event can positively or negatively affect a company's stock price and present it to the class.
The core classes in the MAcc program are considerably different, with each looking at a different aspect of the accounting profession. While these classes will require the bulk of you time and effort, there are a great number of skills that can be taken away from them.
I hope this post was helpful and provided some insight into the coursework at Fisher!
