Getting Involved as a Fisher MAcc Student

Hi everyone! I hope everyone is getting through the last few weeks of their semester in one piece before finals season rolls around! I wanted to post about the opportunities that Fisher MAcc students have to get involved around campus. As one of the graduate student ambassadors, I have been receiving numerous questions about ways that students can get involved around campus.

The first way to get involved is to join the MAcc Council. The MAcc council is a way for students to take a leadership role of their cohort and to organize fundraisers, lead community service events, or to find fun ways for students to get together and socialize outside of class. So far our council has helped organize people for Fisher Impact Day, a day dedicated to service in the Fisher community, had a night to paint pumpkins, and a few social events at restaurants around campus. The MAcc council is whatever the people in it make of it. I am thankful that the people in our council have been very proactive in taking the time to plan events outside of class for me and my classmates.

A second opportunity for MAcc students to get involved is another program called VITA. VITA stands for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance. In this program, MAcc students volunteer a few hours a week helping those that are less fortunate with their income taxes. This program stood out to me because of the service aspect of it. Taking place in the Spring semester, students simply have to do a few training modules on the software and then they are able to go straight to helping people. Having done numerous service activities in high school and college, I plan on taking part in this extra-curricular when I have the chance.

Finally, another opportunity to get involved outside of the classroom is the course that takes place at the Washington Campus in Washington D.C. Students spend a week living in Washington D.C. and learning from industry professionals that work in the city. When people think of accounting, they might think of a Big 4 firm, but there are so many other career paths out there and that is what this program intends on showcasing. We were able to learn a little bit about this program from a speaker who talked about how there are lobbyists within the city advocating for different tax policies. I plan to go on this trip in the Spring and could not be more excited to learn more about the accounting profession with my classmates!

That's all, I hope everyone is able to get through finals and enjoy their holiday season!
