Four Tips to Excelling in Half-Semester Courses
The MHRM program’s second semester in the full time track brings half semester courses. These are eight week long courses that cover content in a more expedited fashion. These classes help to ensure that the Fisher MHRM full time program is solely a three semester course, expediting the time in which students are able to graduate and enter the workforce.
These classes can be challenging for those who have never taken them before. The pace of first and second session courses is often much quicker than that of a full semester class, and the difficulty of the class is not reduced. For this reason, it is important to prepare before taking these half semester courses. These tips are aimed to help second semester MHRM students prepare for shorter, more expedited single session classes.
- Read the syllabus of the course as soon as possible.
Familiarize yourself with the course syllabus, and ensure you are aware of all important class materials and deadlines before the class begins. Ensuring that you have all textbooks or materials needed before the class begins can ensure that you are prepared for early assignments common in half semester classes. Further, it is important to be prepared for midterm and final exams, which come earlier than in full semester classes.
- Stay on top of assignments.
Once the class begins, it is important to promptly start and complete all class assignments. Getting behind in a half semester course can be detrimental to your performance in that class. Thus, it is essential to stay on top of homework and papers.
- Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
Half semester courses are very rewarding, but can be stressful. If you find that you are struggling with the pace of the class, don’t be afraid to ask the professor for help. Especially at Fisher, professors are there to help you succeed in your classes, not to enable failure. Professors are ready and willing to help you adjust to the class pace and coursework.
4. Use the library to study.
The libraries on the Ohio State campuses are great, quiet places to study for challenging courses. Going to the library can be a great way to establish a study schedule.
With these tips, you should be able to succeed in your half semester courses in the MHRM program.
