Thriving Through the First Fall Semester!

Having just gotten through midterms and a nice Fall Break, in the second half of this semester, it might seem like a good time to start taking it easy and maybe even skipping a few readings here and there for classes (I know I've been there!).  However, right now it's more important than ever to stay on track and stay on top of all your responsibilities while also ensuring you are taking care of yourself.  Here are a few ideas on how to do this from my experience in the MHRM Program.

Scheduling.  Know what works best for you in terms of scheduling your routine and your day to day tasks!  Whether it's a physical calendar, a virtual calendar, sticky notes around your work area or computer, reminders or alarms, or a mix of these, scheduling is so important in this program, especially when going through the application process for internships.  As you can see in the picture above, my preferred method is a large week-long physical calendar to keep track of all my plans.  Whichever method you prefer, at this point in the semester, don't let up on jotting down all the things you have going on!

Study buddies.  At this point, you most likely have found your group of people in the program to study with, work with in group projects, and of course to go to Varsity Club with after class!  Make sure to keep surrounding yourself with poeple who understand the importance of balancing work and personal life and who you work and study well with.  Even if you are feeling a bit lacking while doing schoolwork, with the right group of people around you, they will inspire you to stay on top of your work and to hang out with when all the work is finished!

Hobbies.  With all that being said, one of the most important parts of being in graduate school, and especially the MHRM Program, is to take care of your mental and physical health.  Knowing what your hobbies are and what makes you happy is crucial!  It could be something physical like running, working out, taking a walk, or just being outside.  It could also be something like writing, reading, meditating, hanging out with friends, or watching a movie with a nice cup of tea.  For me, my creative outlet is drawing so I made sure I made a little art nook in my bedroom (pictured below) so I have a designated space for what I love to do!  whatever your niche is, make sure you set aside time to do that thing--it is so important in grad school and in life!

As you move through this program, make sure you know what is important to you and how to stay on top of everything as well as when to take a step back.  Good luck!
