Closing Time: 3 Reflections from a MAcc (Almost) Graduate

I cannot believe the semester is coming to a close and I will soon be a graduate of the Fisher MAcc Program. This year has not been what I expected, but I have enjoyed my time at Ohio State. As graduation inches closer, I want to take time to reflect on my past year and give future MAcc students some advice.

1. Take advantage of the flexible elective options.

In the spring semester, you are able to pick any courses you want to take. I recommend doing your research and finding courses that interest you. You will enjoy going to class and learn more if you are interested in the subject. For example, I am taking a Financial Statement Analysis course, and I am excited every Tuesday and Thursday to attend the lecture. I also branched out to classes that MAcc students typically do not take, such as Leadership Effectiveness Through Applied Projects and Team Coaching. In this class, students act as consultants for a local nonprofit and work together to form recommendations to present to the client. Most of the students in this class are MBA or MHRM students so it is interesting to work with them. I highly encourage you to find classes you are interested in taking since the MAcc Program allows for an elective-driven spring semester.

2.  Create relationships with faculty and classmates.

Years from now I may forget certain accounting rules and how to handle a particular type of accounting situation, but I know I will never forget the people I have met during the MAcc Program. I may be biased, but Fisher has some of the best professors. They challenge students to think outside the box and push them to reach a deeper understanding. They are also always available to help you reach your full potential. Additionally, I have made some lifelong friends in the MAcc Program. From working on group projects to bowling at Pins to eating lunch on the Oval, I have had so much fun creating friendships with my fellow classmates. I am disappointed we will all be going our separate ways in just a few short weeks, but I am excited to watch everyone start their careers!

3. Explore Columbus (and campus)!

Columbus is such an interesting city and I enjoyed exploring it as much as COVID-19 allowed. There is always something to do and something new to check out. From hiking trails to amazing restaurants to fun shopping centers, Columbus truly has something for everything. Ohio State's campus is the same way. Ohio State and Fisher plan fun events for students. Our campus provides so many resources for students so everyone can find something to do. I have fond memories of playing sand volleyball and tennis on campus with MAcc classmates.

I am so thankful for my experience at Ohio State and it is bittersweet that it is coming to an end. Pretty soon I will leave the campus I have called home for the past four years. I am excited about the future, but I will always be a Buckeye.

I will leave you all with a final O-H….
