Fisher students at the ROMBA (LGBTQ+) Conference

Last week, I had the opportunity to attend the Reaching Out MBA (ROMBA) Conference in Chicago. During three days full of insightful sessions, a vast career fair, and relationship-building events, I and some of my Fisher peers connected with many MBA students and industry professionals representing the LGBTQ+ community.

The annual ROMBA Conference is a life-changing experience, not only due to its impact on the professional development of MBA students but also because of the personal stories shared at its sessions and panels. Specifically, this year, the focus was on the challenges that the trans community has experienced in 2023 due to the number of laws passed threatening their rights. One of the many powerful stories shared at the conference happened during the closing dinner, where Elliot Page, the Oscar-nominated actor, talked about the impact of acting during his transition and the challenges of being a trans man in Hollywood. He closed the conversation with a mighty statement about how we all should be proud of our awesome selves.

This year, I shared this experience with some first-year and second-year Full-Time MBA students representing members and allies of the LGBTQ+ community. Attending the conference as a team fostered an environment of support and camaraderie that improved our performance at in situ interviews and networking opportunities with tech giants (Amazon, Microsoft, Google), consulting firms (BCG, Deloitte, McKinsey), and financial institutions (JPMorgan, Bank of America), among other industries. Trips of this nature also help tighten bonds and develop friendships that will last beyond graduation day.

MBA conferences open many opportunities for students, presenting them with competitive roles at global companies. Moreover, diversity conferences play a significant role in society's advancement because they allow students from underrepresented communities to connect with employers who value diverse talent. Conferences like ROMBA promote visibility and representation in business, hoping for future leadership teams where everyone has a voice.

Therefore, I recommend MBA students never miss a conference targeted at their specific population because the opportunities and growth are immense. Especially, when sharing the experience with peers and friends who learn from and support each other.
