Background

Dr. Bill Rives joined Ohio State in January 2002, after seven years with the Graduate School of Business at Franklin University (Columbus), to help Fisher College develop executive and professional education programs in financial planning, insurance and risk management.  During a career spanning more than four decades, in addition to Franklin and Ohio State, Bill has held teaching and research appointments at Duke, Princeton, Rice, Trinity University (San Antonio), and the University of Delaware.  His consulting engagements include Aetna Life Insurance Company, USAA Life Insurance Company, USAA Real Estate Company, HCA Healthcare Corporation, the National Institute on Aging, the National Institute of Mental Health, the US Department of Commerce, and various federal, state and regional regulatory agencies.

At Ohio State, Bill develops and teaches online courses on the Principles of Insurance and Risk, Commercial Insurance (Property and Casualty), Life and Health Insurance, and Employee Benefit and Retirement Planning.

Bill holds the Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU®), the Registered Health Underwriter (RHU®), and the Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC®) professional designations.  He also is a licensed insurance agent & broker in Ohio.  Bill has been working in the insurance and financial services industry, as a general agent, educational consultant, and market (new-product) analyst, for more than three decades.

    Basic principles and main characteristics of the Insurance Industry and the fundamentals of risk identification, insurance contracts, and annuities. Prereq: Econ 2001.01 (200), 2002.01 (201), and BusMHR 2292 (BusAdm 499.01). Not open to students with credit for 640.

  • BUSFIN 4310 - Commercial Property and Casualty Insurance

    Fundamentals of commercial property and liability insurance, including commercial property and liability contracts, and the regulation and financial analysis of property and liability insurers. Prereq: 3300 (640), BusMgt 2320 (330), 2321 (331), and BusMHR 2292 (BusAdm 499.01). Not open to students with credit for 749.

  • BUSFIN 4311 - Life and Health Insurance

    Basics of the life insurance and health insurance industry and contracts. Prereq: 3300 (640), BusMgt 2320 (330), and BusMHR 2292 (BusAdm 499.01). Not open to students with credit for 741.

  • BUSFIN 4312 - Employee Benefits Plans

    Fundamentals of insurance topics related to the human resource function such as health and retirement benefits, and COBRA. Prereq: BusMgt 2320 (330), 3300 (640), and BusMHR 2292 (BusAdm 499.01). Not open to students with credit for 741.

  • BUSFIN 7750 - Healthcare Finance

    Covers the basic concepts and principles of healthcare finance. Includes discussions of financial reporting, cost-allocation, product pricing, budgeting, time-value of money, capital investment analysis, capital-raising, and cash management with a special emphasis on the health care industry. Aimed at current and future managers and executives in leadership roles. Prereq: Admission to a graduate program (doctoral, masters, professional, or graduate non-degree) or a graduate level distance learning curriculum, or permission of instructor. Not open to students in the Fisher College of Business Masters of Business Administration programs, the Masters of Accounting program, or the Specialized Masters in Finance program.
