Is your application incomplete for letters of recommendation?

When you fill out your application for the MBA program, you have the opportunity to enter the names of up to three individuals who can serve as references on your behalf.  Once you enter the names and email addresses of these individuals in the online system, they will receive the request to complete an online recommendation form for you.  You are only required to submit two letters of reference, yet if you indicate the names of three references, your application will technically remain incomplete until we receive all three letters of recommendation.  Please make sure that the references you have identified are prepared to write letters on your behalf before you submit your names through the online sysem.  In order to expedite the review of your application, please reach out to your references to encourage them to complete the process.  You will be able to tell if the letters have been submitted by your references by viewing your application status/check-list.  While we are able to conduct an initial review of your application, we are unable to make a final decision until your letters of recommendation come in.

As a reminder, recommendations should be provided from employers, supervisors, professors, or others who are able to comment on your professional and educational goals and potential (no friends or relatives please.)


Thinking about applying for the fall? Plan ahead!

1) Who will write your letters of recommendation?  Give them plenty of time and direction.  The majority of our applicants ask their references to utilize the online recommendation form.  By the time your recommender receives the link to complete the reference form and upload the letter of support, he/she should already know what to expect and be prepared to complete the process.  Fisher prefers professional references over academic references, unless you are a recent graduate from an undergraduate or graduate program and have a strong relationship with a professor who can speak to your potential for success in the MBA program.  Current supervisors are our first choice for a reference, followed by previous supervisors, colleagues, clients, or individuals with whom you work in the community or in a professional organization outside of your primary place of employment.

2) Start thinking about your personal statement.  Our guidelines for writing the personal statement are posted online so you can review them before you even begin an application.  Start to put together your thoughts and communicate your rationale for pursuing the MBA degree from Ohio State.

3) Prepare for the GMAT exam.  Visit mba.com for all of the information you could possibly want to learn about the test and test preparation, including  free, downloadable, full length practice tests.  Most schools will look at your highest score, but ideally you only have to take the test once at $250 per attempt!  Click here to find out whether you might qualify for a GMAT waiver. 

4) Request transcripts from your undergraduate institution(s) early.  Sometimes it takes awhile for those transcripts to arrive, so don’t wait until the last minute.  Fisher is now able to accept scanned or electronic copies of transcripts for academic review during the application process.  Official hardcopies will be requested after you are offered admission and prior to enrollment, unless the electronic transcript is sent directly to OSU from the granting institution and is considered official.  If you already have an undergraduate or graduate degree from Ohio State, you will not need to request a formal transcript for courses taken here, as we already have access to it.

Hit submit – with or without your completed recommendations

We have received several inquiries during the past couple of weeks from soon-to-be applicants. They told us they’re waiting to submit their applications because they’re waiting for all of their references to be completed before they submit their applications.

Here’s some advice – don’t wait to submit your application. Once you’ve completed your application and you’ve uploaded your essay responses and your updated resume, the only thing left before you submit your application is to list your references in your application. After you do this, you are ready to submit. You do not gain any advantage on waiting for your references to submit their recommendations before you submit your application. Although the admission committee will not review your application before it is complete (including receipt of all required references and/or required test scores), you will help to speed up the processing of your application by submitting it as soon as you are able. If there are any materials submitted to us on your application after you submit your application (e.g. references,  GMAT scores, etc.), we will match those materials to your already-submitted application. Your application will be processed more quickly this way than waiting for everything to be “done” before submitting your application.

So, don’t delay and submit today!
