Why am I Working Here Again?

Oftentimes as business students, we lose sight of the purpose of our work. Excel spreadsheets, CRM updating, e-mail after email, what’s it all for anyway?

When taking this job with Weight Watchers, I knew about the brand, as my mom had done the program years ago. In my mind, I had a picture of a group of people in a room talking about their weight loss and going on and on about everything they eat. Little did I know this perception would change so quickly.

Every month Weight Watchers holds a corporate meeting in which they disclose to their employees new products and updates to the company. The other interns and I had been looking forward to it all week, as we do for any meeting, to break up our day on the computer. Finally, the day had come! The first product was revealed, but after that I started to tune out–it wasn’t as exciting as I had hoped for. I was ready to go back to my desk and continue my work, until one of the members came to the front of the room and started to talk about her weight loss journey. After her first few words, I didn’t want to leave.

Since then I have heard a few other member’s stories at Weight Watchers member meetings, as well as I have started the program myself. I didn’t realize how much of a lifestyle change it truly is! Although our journeys have all been so different, we all have one result in common–not weight loss, but happiness. Reaching a goal or progressing towards one can be rough, but the support Weight Watchers provides its members keeps them motivated and proud of their success so far.

Knowing the purpose of the company I work for and seeing it in action has truly changed my attitude at work. It gives me a reason to make it through the long commute and those hours on the computer. Although it may not seem like my small intern tasks add value to the company at times, I know that my work helps those higher up make a larger impact.  It also made me realize the importance of finding my purpose and finding a workplace that aligns with what I feel I am set to do. By working with like minded people, I find myself more excited to come to work every day.

So why do I update the CRM system, pull reports, and work on sales reviews every day? I do it to make people happy!

Last week, the Fisher Futures class was given the opportunity to listen to Jeff Rice, the executive director of the Office of Career Management. While there were many “pearls of wisdom” in his talk, the single most important piece of advice he gave us was to remain confident in the job search and to take pride in ourselves as Buckeyes. As we prepare for our futures and begin to journey toward internships, interviews, and other challenges, it is very important to keep in mind Jeff’s message of confidence building. Often times, we will be competing with students from other schools who misguidedly believe they have the upper hand in competing with us and we need to keep Jeff’s thoughts in mind and maintain our internal self-confidence regarding the quality of our school and Fisher College of Business.

Fisher is a premier business school, recognized by Businessweek as the 34th and 12th best public business school for undergraduate and graduate studies, respectively. Beyond that, Businessweek states we are the 9th best worldwide for the executive MBA. Our business school produces CEOs of companies and leaders around the globe. These statistics and confidence builders are so important to remember as we go forth. Jeff was very astute in telling the Fisher Futures class that, as Buckeyes, we must be proud and understand there is no geographical constraint to our job search and the opportunities are infinite.

Notes from the trenches: Self-Awareness

I recently conducted a QUIC interview with a young man who left an interesting impression on me. When I came out to the lobby to collect him for his interview, my first impression of him was the he was standoffish. He had short, one-worded responses, didn’t smile, and overall I couldn’t tell if he woke up on the wrong side of the bed, didn’t eat his Wheaties, or was just a grumpy Gus.

Then the interview began, and this young man’s demeanor completely changed. It was like he secretly slugged a can of Red Bull when my back was turned. He was perky, engaging, interesting, and I was genuinely interested in hearing more about him.

Cue to the end of the interview, and once we were no longer “in character,” Grumpy Gus was back.

Because part of the QUIC interview process is to point out things you might not even realize you do (i.e. saying the word ‘like’, clicking your pen, tapping your fingers on the table), I felt obliged to tell this young man how he came across both before and after the interview, and how it altered my perception of him. He commented back that he’s been told this many times in his life, and I certainly wasn’t the first.

This is an example of self-awareness. For those of you who maybe aren’t aware (haha, the irony), self-awareness, in a nutshell, is the ability to recognize oneself as an individual separate from the environment and other individuals. What this means in terms of interviewing is that you have to be aware of your strengths, weaknesses, triggers, and nuances so that you can you can appear in the interview to be a realistic combination of humble and confident. Able but flexible. Assertive not aggressive. Sounds almost possible right? Nah, not really. Just be yourself. Be the best you.

And how do you be the best you? By being self-aware. This is why the QUIC interview process is so helpful. Sometimes we are so focused on giving the right answer that we neglect to give the answer that’s right for us. It’s been proven time and again that the most memorable and successful interview answers are the ones that are genuine. A made-up answer may work sometimes, but it’s more likely to sound fake (because it is) and won’t leave a lasting impression on the recruiter.

For Grumpy Gus,  since he was very well-aware that he could turn on the charm during the interview, I advised him to make sure that he turned on this charm from minute one. As soon as he walks through the door to a company, he has to have the same enthusiasm he showed during the interview itself, and not to turn it back off until he is safely within the confines of his vehicle and away from company property. I was only conducting a mock interview, but if this had been the real deal, I definitely would have reservations about hiring a candidate that seemed grumpy one minute and happy the next. Employers like predictability, and being two completely different personalities in an interview can backfire.

So to all you Grumpy Gus’s, pen clickers, and “Um, like”ers out there – use constructive criticism to your advantage! The candidates who are self-aware are usually the first to take accountability for their actions, can communicate effectively, and overall are considered more likeable, aka hireable.
