Quick formatting tricks to keep your resume to one page!

Many students will come in to career coaching with a two page resume and no idea how to fix it.  Their first thought may be to eliminate some of their less business relevant experiences or pick and choose what they think is the most important to keep.  But I look at many resumes and contrary to popular belief, the second page can usually be avoided just by using some formatting tricks!  These are a few of the easiest formatting secrets to make sure your resume is one page and still full of your great experiences!


First things first, you do not have to conform to one inch margins like most of your school papers will require.  The margins can be much smaller, mine are at 0.5 all around.  I can’t tell you how much more room you gain for your accomplishments this way.  Sometimes a larger margin up top or around the sides can even give your resume the false illusion that you are missing something.

Font Sizes:

Fonts can be smaller than point 12 Times New Roman!  I know it goes against everything you have learned in English class, but I recommend having between 10 point and 12 point.  Any larger will probably be too big, and any smaller and the resume may look too busy and recruiters will have to squint to read it.  Making the font even a little bit smaller might make your two line bullet point into one line and give you the space you need.

Contact Information:

Keeping your contact information to one line helps so much.  A lot of students come in struggling to make room for all of their internships and activities, but I see that they have a permanent address, local address, and then two lines for email and phone. By containing all information to one line below the name, you save so much room! Why take up space for contact info when you could be highlighting on your newest internship that you are excited about?

High School Activities:

Once you have gotten involved in tons of new exciting organizations, clubs, and job opportunities in college, it is time to take off those high school activities and education!  This is a pivotal moment in your undergraduate college career, when you have so many cool college experiences that you don’t have room for high school clubs anymore on your 1 page resume.  Many students will at first be nervous about taking high school education or sports off of their resume, maybe because it was such a big part of their lives, but trust me, when you are running out of space on a resume, those things should usually be the first to go.  Granted there are exceptions to that rule, but for the most part, recruiters like to hear and see what you have been up to at OSU.

Transfer Credit: 

Transfer credit is also something that can be reformatted to fit the one page requirement.  Many students believe that you have to format your college transfer credit the same way as your OSU education section, but this is not the case.

If you have actually received a degree from the previous institution, you would want to format it that way, but if it is just transfer credit you might even confuse recruiters into thinking you have received a previous degree if you format it that way.  A better way is a quick bullet point explanation. This easily condenses your education section so you have more room for leadership, work, and extracurricular activities.

Microsoft Word Resume Formatting Hacks

Let’s face it-creating the perfect resume can be frustrating. Not just the content of the resume, which is an art form in and of itself, but also with formatting. Templates can seem like an easy fix but can become troublesome when updating the document to meet your individual needs. How many times have you tried to format your resume template in Word and felt like this?


To help you out, because, you know, we’ve been there, here are a few Microsoft Word hacks to ease your formatting frustrations.



Underlining section headers can increase readability. Select the Underline Tool (Ctrl +U). Type your header, then hit tab (space bar will not work) until you reach the end of the line. Bold will increase the line’s thickness.



Click the space in where you want the bullet. Select the Insert tab at the top of the page.

Select Symbol, then choose Advanced Symbol. Choose your desired the symbol. To change the size of the symbol, highlight it and change the font size.



 Type your date, then click the space before the date. Hit the Space bar until the date hits the next line, then delete one space.

Highlight the area that needs line spacing reduced. On the Home tab, choose the Character Spacing tab. Choose Line Spacing Options.

 Set your Before and After Spacing at 0pt. To further reduce line spacing, select Line Spacing: Single.

How to Stay Motivated

“Gosh, I just love being freezing cold all the time!”

~ said no one, ever.

Here in Ohio we are having our fair share of extreme temperatures. And I am one of those people whose motivation level directly correlates with the outside temperature. 75 degrees out? That means I am 75% more likely to complete a task. -11 degrees? Yeah, good luck with that.

All joking aside, it can be very difficult to stay motivated during this time of year. So, here are some ways to keep your career search inertia going:

1) Take this time to ramp up your LinkedIn presence – update your profile, take a new professional headshot, find new connections, or follow new companies. Special bonus points for following beach resorts and suntan lotion distributors.

2) Research companies you’re interested in; bookmark their job boards and follow them on LinkedIn.

3) Update your resume with your most recent work experience, activities, and newly acquired skills. Skills like snow-shoeing, bobsledding, and navigating the icy sidewalks without falling. That kind of thing.

4) Go out for fresh air. Take a walk in the cold with flip-flops on. That’ll wake you up.

5) Plan at least 3 informational interviews with contacts you would like to add to your network. Invite them for coffee. Caffeine + Warm beverage = Great conversation!!!

So these are just a few (mostly) helpful tips to keep that job search momentum going, even when you’re freezing cold. Just don’t show up to an interview in sweatpants, please.

Job Search Momentum – How to Keep It Moving

If we are really honest with ourselves, we’ve all been scared on some level about the job search.  Sometimes this fear can bring about a really bad case of job search procrastination.  By procrastinating, we can avoid facing our job search fears by not reaching out to people to build a network, by not applying to opportunities and by not practicing our interviewing skills.  By avoiding the work of the job search we don’t have to face our fear of rejection.  As a result, the search for employment can stall and even fizzle out.

The best way to avoid letting procrastination drag you down is to keep moving forward with your search. Once you have your momentum going forward it is easier to keep going than to have to start over.  As we all know, it is a real drag on our energy and confidence when we lose our momentum and feel like we are starting from scratch. Even worse, feeling like we had circumstances on our side and then we dropped the ball letting the momentum die.

Ten ideas on how to keep the momentum in your job search alive:

  1. Set up a meeting for coffee with someone you admire and get their advice
  2. Explore your school’s alumni network and find alumni to get advice from
  3. If you’re in school, make an appointment with your career services office
  4. Find a book on job search strategy and make it a goal to read one chapter you find interesting
  5. Find a local career fair to attend in the next two months and put it on your calendar
  6. Make sure you have the “uniform” you need for interviews and meetings
  7. Polish your shoes – especially guys, we are lazy about this but it is part of your first impression
  8. Have someone review your resume one more time
  9. Learn about informational interviews and set one up
  10. Write thank you notes to people who have recently helped you or even people who helped you five years ago

The real secret to momentum is doing little things on a consistent basis.  If you keep moving you will build momentum for your job search which will in turn boost your energy and confidence.  People with these two things are much more attractive to employers. Keep doing the little things for your job search and over time you will have accomplished the big thing – finding a job.
