These past few weeks have flown by, and somehow, I am already into the second week of my internship at Kohl’s Corporate in Milwaukee, Wisconsin!
I arrived in Milwaukee a few days before my internship started. Kohl’s houses all of its interns (huge perk!) in the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee dorms downtown, which has made it much easier to meet people and get to know everyone in the program much quicker. My first full day here, I explored downtown a little bit, checked out some local restaurants, and walked along the beach! Milwaukee is much bigger than I had anticipated, and my sense direction is not always the most reliable, so I ended up a little lost and walked about seven miles around the city!
My first week consisted of several classes in which all of the merchandising interns learned the various programs used by the analysts in each office. There are roughly sixty merchant interns, a small portion of the two hundred interns Kohl’s has this summer at the corporate office! University Relations and Talent Development team members led these classes, which were really helpful to us and will be extremely useful in the coming weeks as we start to take on more responsibility.
At the end of the first day we met our teams that we would be working with over the next ten weeks. As I said in my previous post, I am in the Beauty Buying Office, which I am so excited about. I was extremely lucky to get an amazing team to work with this summer, and everyone in my office was so welcoming to me. Each office is made up of a Buyer, Assistant Buyer, Merchandise Planner, Analyst, and Specialist. The buyer in my office is my manager, and the analyst is my intern coach. Kohl’s did a really great job of making sure each intern had several resources to learn from over the summer, and knowing that there is someone you can always ask questions to is extremely relieving for an intern at a big company in the first few weeks!
This week, I am spending time learning each of the different roles in the offices, as well as how to run different reports on the company’s software programs. I am also getting started on my first project, which I am really excited about! Hopefully by this time next week, I will be well versed in all the different programs and systems, and little more familiar with the city-trying to avoid another several mile walk!
