5 tips when submitting your resume with your SMF application

Take time to craft a good looking resume and it may pay dividends for you.

If you’re applying to the Fisher SMF program, you need to submit an updated resume as part of your complete application. Your resume says a lot about you.

Here are some tips to submit an effective resume for your application:


1) Make it easy for us to read

I have read some resumes that are all over the place when it comes to format. Spacing is too big or too small. Font size is too big or too small. Font type is hard to read. The list goes on. There are plenty of good professional templates you can use – if you’re unsure which format to use, I recommend a modified version of the one used by Fisher graduate students. Click here for the templates. (Click on RESUME PREPARATION and scroll down for the examples of resumes by program.)

  • Font size: I recommend 12 point
  • Font type: I recommend Times New Roman or Arial or a similar easy-to-read font


2) If the info is relevant, a resume longer than one page is fine

Give us your unabridged version. Do not leave off information if it is relevant for your application. It is ok to submit a resume longer than one page as long as the additional information you submit is relevant to the program to which you are applying. (NOTE: “Hobbies and interests” are not relevant for your resume. This information might be relevant in the context of your essay responses but listing that one of your hobbies is knitting or that you enjoy traveling is not relevant.)

3) You do not need an objective statement
Some formats will recommend you insert an “objective statement” at the top of your resume. For purposes of applying to this program, I recommend you do not include an objective statement. If you are applying for admission to the Fisher Master of Accounting program, I am quite sure that your objective is to be admitted! You do not need to state the obvious.

4) Please
proofred proofread!
It is very easy to miss a misspelling or three. It is very easy to neglect to insert a comma where one is needed. Have someone that you trust review your resume before you submit it with the rest of your application. Submitting a sloppy resume reflects very poorly on the applicant – don’t let this happen to you.

5) References on your resume? Not needed.
I still resumes listing specific references. You are required to submit three references as part of your application. Do not list them separately on your resume. This information is definitely not needed. Also, do not include the phrase “References Available on Request.” It’s not needed.
In summary, put forth as much effort and care with your resume as you do with all other parts of your application. Submit a strong resume and it will reflect well on you.
