If you’ve been waitlisted, here is some information to help give you some clarity on your status
The SMF admissions office has been releasing admission decisions over the past several months and will continue to do so for the next few weeks. Decisions on applications fall into one of three categories:
The first two decisions are self-explanatory. Based on the questions we have been getting from waitlisted applicants, the third category (“Waitlisted”) may require some additional information.
How do I know if I’ve been waitlisted?
You will receive an email from the SMF Admissions Office informing you that you have been placed on the waitlist.
What happens if I am on the waitlist?
You will either be admitted or denied off the waitlist.
How often is the waitlist reviewed?
On average, it’s reviewed once every four to six weeks. The SMF Admissions Office will clear the waitlist – that is, make a decision on all applications on the waitlist – no later than April 30, 2014.
If I am removed from the waitlist and admitted or denied, how will I be notified?
The quickest way to check your status is to check your status online. (A surface letter will also be mailed to you – but depending on where you are, this can take a while for you to receive the letter. As such, we recommend checking your app status online.)
How many people are on the waitlist? What are my chances for admission?
The number of candidates on the waitlist fluctuates depending on timing within the admissions cycle. While we anticipate admitting some waitlisted candidates, the applicant pool and yield on offers of admission varies each year. Therefore, we cannot predict exactly how many candidates will be placed on the waitlist or how many applicants will be offered admission based on previous years.
Do you rank your waitlist?
No, we do not rank our waitlist. We periodically review all waitlisted candidates but waitlisted candidates are not placed in a ranked order.
Do you offer feedback to candidates who have been waitlisted?
The SMF Admissions Committee does not release details of its admission decisions to its applicants beyond the admission decision itself. Therefore, we cannot give you specific reasons as to why your specific application to this program was waitlisted nor can we counsel you on your specific situation.
Can I submit new information to add to my existing application? Will this help?
You are welcome to submit new information – whether or not it will help you is impossible to say. Focus on substantive, meaningful improvements that you feel will make you a stronger candidate or provide information not already presented in your application.
Examples of “new information” might include:
- Updated test scores (e.g. GMAT, GRE, TOEFL)
- Updated resume
- Additional recommendations
Submitting new information is neither required nor necessary and may or may not affect your likelihood of being admitted.
If you wish to submit new information, you may submit updates via email or mail to the admissions office. When possible, email is preferred.
