2012 application deadlines – one is past and one is coming up

If you plan to apply, be sure you're aware of the deadline!

The application deadlines for the Fisher MAcc program are posted here. To recap:

  • International applicants: final deadline was February 1, 2012
  • Domestic applicants: final deadline is May 15, 2012

There is sometimes confusion among applicants with respect to what “international” and “domestic” mean. These terms do NOT necessarily refer to where an applicant is physically located at the time of application. Rather, the terms refer to the applicant’s legal “visa” status. If the applicant needs a student visa to study in the United States, that applicant is an international applicant. An international applicant can be in the U.S. already. For example, if the applicant is in the U.S. on a student visa and is attending a U.S. university and applies to the Fisher MAcc program, s/he is an international applicant. All others (e.g. US citizens, US permanent residents) are domestic applicants.

If you plan on applying for autumn 2013, please click here (“Request more information”). We will contact you as soon as the new application is available. We expect the 2013 application to be available no later than August 2012.

3 Things to Keep in Mind When Preparing Your Fisher MAcc Application

Three things to keep in mind when preparing your MAcc application

Be aware of deadlines

Deadlines have a way of sneaking up on you. I recommend taking a look at the deadlines and working backward. If you want to submit your application by December 1, for example, you know that gives you approximately three months or twelve weeks from now until then. You need to be aware of how long each item will take to be completed and submitted to us. Examples include but are not limited to:

GMAT: About two weeks will go by from the time you take the GMAT to the time we get your scores. Accordingly, if you want your scores to be here by December 1, you should plan on taking the GMAT no later than November 15.

References: How long will your references take to prepare their recommendations for you? Work backwards from December 1 and add an extra couple of weeks or more as “cushion” in case anything unforeseen and unpredicted occurs.

It is OK to do things “out of order” /  you do not need to wait before everything is complete before submitting your application materials

For example, you can submit GMAT scores before submitting your application. Conversely, you can submit your application before taking the GMAT. You can submit your application before all your references are received. And so on.

Be very aware of how long things will take to complete/submit when compiling your application materials

As mentioned earlier, we will not receive your GMAT scores the day after you sit for the test. Plan for the lag time. Also, your references will need (on average) at least one month to prepare your letters of recommendation.

Transcripts can take a long or short time to get to us – it all depends on the university issuing the transcripts. And sometimes colleges “forget” to send them. Advice: Find out from your school how long it will take to issue your transcripts. Plan accordingly. Build in a margin of safety. And follow up with your school to ensure it sent them to us.

SPECIAL NOTES TO INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS:

i) If you have or will earn your undergraduate degree outside of the United States, you must submit course by course evaluations prepared by either WES or ECE. These can take six weeks or longer to prepare and deliver to us. Plan accordingly.

ii) TOEFL scores can take a long time to arrive at Ohio State. How long? It varies. It can be anything from several weeks to several months. The delay is almost always due to the test administrator involved. If you are an international student and need to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores, be sure to keep in close touch with the TOEFL or IELTS test administrator.

Do NOT panic – we are still accepting applications for autumn 2011

We are still accepting applications from domestic applicants

We have received several calls recently, asking whether we are still accepting applications for the Fisher MAcc program. The answer is “yes.” If you are a domestic applicant, we guarantee we will review applications submitted to us by May 1, 2011. (We may extend the deadline beyond May 1 but will not know for sure until the last week of April.) A good way to see whether we are still accepting applications is to go to fisher.osu.edu/macc. If the application link is still posted there, we are still accepting applications.

Note to those who wish to apply for autumn 2012: do NOT use the application currently posted at fisher.osu.edu/macc. If you have provided your name and email address to us already and have indicated that you are interested in applying for autumn 2012, we will contact you as soon as the autumn 2012 application is ready. We expect it to be posted online during August 2011 and no later than September 1, 2011.

What to expect after the Dec 31 application deadline

Keep in mind upcoming deadlines

Friday, December 31 marks the Fisher MAcc priority funding deadline for domestic MAcc applicants for Autumn 2011.

Here is what you can expect in terms of the admissions process over the next several weeks:

  • Remember that once you submit your application, the processing office has to match up your application form with any supplemental materials you may have sent previously or have yet to send.
  • Once we have identified any materials that belong with your application, we will update your checklist on your online application so you can check to see what is still missing. These checklist updates are NOT made in “real time.” Please wait at least five business days to check the online tracking system.
  • Once you have a complete application, your file will be put into review.  During this time of year, the review process generally takes 2-4 weeks.
  • Once your file has been reviewed, you will receive communication about the status of your application.  Possible outcomes include:
    • request for interview
    • defer a decision until a future date/wait list
    • application not accepted/deny
  • If you are invited to interview, you will be contacted via email with available dates/times to schedule  an in-person or phone interview
  • Upon completion of an interview, you can expect to hear a decision within 1-3 weeks.  Possible outcomes include:
    • admission
    • defer a decision until a future date/wait list
    • application not accepted/deny

Please keep in mind that:

In addition to weekends, the Graduate Programs Office will be closed on Thursday, December 23, Friday, December 24 and Friday, December 31 in observance of the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.

MAcc students are currently on winter break until Monday, January 3.  Admission staff  WILL be checking the fisher_macc@fisher.osu.edu email account sporadically during winter break, except on holidays. The account will be checked again on daily basis on/after January 3.

I wish you all the best of luck with your application to the program.  Please be patient with us over the next several weeks. We will do our absolute best to communicate with you on a timely basis, but it is the holidays after all, so mail delays and staff absences may create a backlog as we process all of your applications.

“I submitted my materials three hours ago – did you receive them?”

We recently had our first early deadline (Nov 15) – specifically, for international applicants who wish to be considered for both admissions and then fellowship award nomination. We have received several inquiries from applicants who want us to check the status of materials sent to us.

Please note the following:

  • Items that are sent to us via surface mail (e.g. transcripts, etc.) are noted as received on the day we receive them and will be considered “on time” if this date meets our application deadline.
  • You can check your application status online by logging into your account. Please do not contact the office to confirm receipt of materials.
  • There is and will be a delay between the time that we receive materials and those materials being recorded as “received” on your status page. The delay can be anywhere from one to ten business days, depending on the time of year. Around application deadlines, expect the delay to be closer to be between five and ten business days.
  • If you submit materials to us (e.g. transcripts, TOEFL scores, etc.) prior to submitting your application, we are unable to confirm receipt of those materials.

What if you miss the Nov 15 deadline? We will review files in the order of completion until the February 1 international applicant final deadline. However, all else being equal, you should complete your application as early in the admissions process as possible.

Welcome, fall 2011 MAcc applicants

It’s that time of year again:  the autumn 2011 Fisher/Ohio State MAcc application is now available.  Plan ahead so that all of your application materials arrive by the applicable deadline:

  • International application deadline (fellowship/financial aid consideration)
    • November 15
  • Domestic application deadline (fellowship/financial aid consideration)
    • December 31
  • Final application deadline for international applicants
    • February 1
  • Final application deadline for domestic applicants
    • April 1
    • Applications will be accepted from qualified domestic applicants after April 1 on space available basis; however, applications submitted earlier get more consideration than those submitted later.

We often receive questions on what “domestic” and “international” means. Domestic applicants are those who are U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents. International applicants are everyone else.

I recommend that you review the Fisher MAcc web site carefully and visit this admissions blog on a regular basis to stay updated on the application process and informed about the Fisher MAcc program. Don’t be afraid to post your questions and comments on the blog. If you have a question, most likely several other applicants are wondering the exact same thing!
