Autumn MAcc info sessions scheduled

Register now for a MAcc info session!

One of the best ways to learn about a program is to attend an information session. As many of our students in the current MAcc class are NOT from Ohio State, we are hosting webinars to allow you to engage with us during your graduate school selection process.

The advantages of a webinar for all of you include being able to learn more about Ohio State without leaving your house, no costly travel expenses, and the ability to ask questions in “real time.”

MAcc online information sessions are LIVE (not recorded) which means you will get to interact with the admissions office directly.

When are these information sessions?

  • Oct. 17, 2-3pm EDT MACC (WEBINAR)
  • Dec. 6, 5-6pm EST MACC (WEBINAR)
Note that we are also hosting a couple of information sessions for students interested in the accelerated BSBA/MACC program. These information sessions are only for currently enrolled undergraduate accounting majors at Ohio State. If you are not a currently enrolled accounting undergraduate major at Ohio State, do notregister for the BSBA/MACC sessions referenced below.

  • Oct. 28, 1-2pm EDT BSBA/MAcc (WEBINAR)
  • Nov. 18, 10-11am EST BSBA/MAcc (Gerlach Hall)

To register, please click here or visit our site. All registrants for the online info sessions will receive an email with log-in information the day of the scheduled information session. If you are attending the in-person BSBA/MACC info session, these are held in Gerlach Hall. Signage will be posted the day of the info session, guiding you to the location/specific room for the info session.

See you soon!

National Middle Market Summit on October 6 at The Ohio State University

There are always a lot of interesting things going on at The Fisher College of Business and The Ohio State University. On October 6, the Fisher College of Business and GE Capital are sponsoring a major conference on Ohio State’s campus. The National Middle Market Summit is bringing together some of the best minds in business to discuss ways to nurture “middle market” companies – smaller than large conglomerates but bigger than small companies, this is an area of business that has not been actively researched before. This conference will help to start that dialogue.

If you are unable to attend in person, you can register to view the proceedings online. Click below for the personal invitation from Fisher’s Dean Christine Poon.

Semesters are coming, semesters are coming!

Semesters are coming! Semesters are coming!

Paul Revere’s ride through the night is one of the more famous moments in early American history. He famously warned everyone that “The British are coming! The British are coming!” I know, this is a very rough segue but, as you may know, Ohio State is transitioning to semesters, effective summer 2012. The first MAcc class that will be affected by this switch to semesters will be the class admitted for autumn 2012.

If you are part of this group, what does this mean? The biggest change is that Ohio State’s school year will start much earlier than in the past. For example, 2011 autumn term begins on September 21. In 2012, autumn term will begin on August 22, a full month earlier than the start of autumn 2011. The Fisher MAcc program has already incorporated this earlier start with its application deadlines. If you submit a complete application by the applicable deadline, you will be reviewed for autumn 2012 admission. In addition to starting the academic year sooner, the academic year will end sooner. For example, spring 2012 commencement will occur on June 11, 2012. Compare this to 2013 spring commencement on May 5, 2013.

If you have any questions on this or anything else, please let us know.

Record setting spring 2011 commencement at Ohio State

Ohio State graduated the most students ever in a single commencement ceremony on July 13, 2011. Added bonus: The weather was perfect. Mid 70s, partly cloudy, breezy!

UTSAV 2011 at Fisher

UTSAV 2011

Last week, the Fisher Indian Students Association (“FISA”) hosted UTSAV. What is UTSAV? In FISA’s own words:

UTSAV, the flagship event of the FISA, is a celebration of everything Indian: Bollywood, Bharatnatyam, Bindis and Biryani! One of the most awaited events in Spring quarter at Fisher, UTSAV showcases the talents of our very own Fisher students, be it dancing on bollywood medleys or sashaying down in beautiful Indian clothes. A fun event for both participants and the audience, finished up with sumptuous Indian food!

Luckily the weather held up. We’ve had a much rainier than normal spring in central Ohio and many people worried that it might get rained out. Luckily, everything worked out. The fashion show (see photo above), the Bollywood dance routines (see below), musical interludes, etc., all went without a hitch. Great time to be had by all! If you’re anywhere near Fisher’s campus in mid May, you need to check out UTSAV. Definitely one of the premier events on campus! You can see additional photos from UTSAV 2011 here.

MAcc Gives Back, 2011 edition

The MAcc class of 2011, with the support of the MAcc AssociationDeloitte, KPMG, and the Fisher AMIS Department, participated in MAcc Gives Back last Friday. MAcc Gives Back is an annual community service project where students, faculty, staff, and local professionals from the accounting industry (most, if not all, of them Fisher MAcc alumni), helped at a handful of local not-for-profit organizations. This year, MAcc Gives Back helped out at Ronald McDonald House, Goodwill, Elam Environmental Center, Habitat ReStore, MidOhio Foodbank, and Eldon Ward YMCA.

After working in teams on site at these locations all morning, everyone reconvened outside of Gerlach Hall for a well-deserved lunch. It was a lot of fun getting to know and working with everyone outside of Gerlach Hall – and all for a good cause. We look forward to next year’s MAcc Gives Back!

In addition to the photos posted above, additional photos are posted here and here.

An inside look at Sen. Sarbanes’ visit to Fisher College of Business (Ohio State) on April 12

One of the benefits of being a student at the Fisher College of Business is your access to a truly amazing number of renowned guest experts/speakers. Example: On April 12, Fisher was honored to host former Senator Paul Sarbanes, co-author of the landmark Sarbanes-Oxley Act, which overhauled federal oversight of publicly traded companies in the U.S. Click on the clip below to see and hear some of his presentation to Fisher MAcc students.

Always something going on and plenty to do and be involved with while at Fisher …

Ohio State Tax Clinic Helps Families and Boosts Economy

Fisher MAcc students help out with Volunteer Income Tax Assistance/Ohio State Tax Clinic each year. According to the IRS:

The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) Programs offer free tax help for taxpayers who qualify … trained community volunteers may help with special credits, such as Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled. In addition to free tax return preparation assistance, most sites also offer free electronic filing (e-filing). Individuals taking advantage of the e-file program will receive their refunds in half the time compared to returns filed on paper – even faster when tax refunds are deposited directly into one’s bank account.

The VITA Program at Fisher offers free tax help to low- to moderate-income people who cannot prepare their own tax returns. Fisher MAcc students are certified volunteers by going through training to help prepare basic tax returns in the Columbus area. Check out the video clip below for some first hand comments from current Fisher MAcc students on their experience helping the community.

Register now for the Fisher 5K (Sunday, May 1, 2011)

The Fisher 5K, a charity race organized by the Fisher 5K Association of the Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University, is an annual Run/Walk (5 kilometers or 3.1 miles) which began in 2004 and is held on The Ohio State University campus.  It is the largest service event hosted by the Fisher graduate students and the largest 5K on Ohio State’s campus.  Every year this charity race is organized during the spring and the proceeds of the race go to the benefit of the Boys and Girls Club of Columbus. In 2010, over 700 people participated helping to raise over $17,000 for the Boys and Girls Club of Columbus.

The weather has been fantastic every year they’ve held the race – fingers crossed for more good weather on May 1, 2011! Not only does the event raise money for a very good cause, the race’s course is a great way to see, up close and personal, much of Ohio State’s beautiful Columbus campus!

To register and for more information, please click here. (HINT: If you register by March 19, you’ll be able to get a discounted rate on the registration fee.)

“But for Ohio State”

But for Ohio State, I would have never been able to go to college. I love Ohio State, and all the good it does. I hope this gift stimulates those who have received an education here, or been touched by this remarkable institution, to think about how they, too, can give back. ~Les Wexner, OSU Class of ’59

As you may have heard, Les Wexner, Chairman and CEO of the Limited Brands, just announced a donation of $100 million to The Ohio State University, the largest gift given in Ohio State’s history. Hear what President E. Gordon Gee and Les Wexner have to say about this “transformational moment.”
