I never knew selling chemicals could be so much fun. For the past two weeks I have been shadowing account managers at Univar, traveling to big name customers all over northeast Ohio. Meeting so many different people and learning about their backgrounds and the industries they work in has been fascinating, as well as all the plant and facility tours they love giving me, the “new kid.” In addition, talking to our own local, and some regional, account managers is humbling and very beneficial for understanding the business. I think I have found the perfect niche for me at Univar.
Along with this, the tools we give our account managers are amazing. They have iPads and tailored apps to keep up on pricing, industry trends, as well as their own personal accounts and selling trends. Using these tools in the field adds a whole new dimension to their job, and being able to utilize such technology is essential for staying on top of the marketplace. After all, this is the front line for our company, and being able to come as prepared as possible to the negotiating table sets us up for success.
Ultimately, from talking to so many customers and account managers, I can see myself working in this part of the company. Building relationships, networking and, in a way, being your own boss are only two of innumerable reasons why the past two weeks have been the most exciting for me thus far in my internship. Who knows, maybe in a few years I’ll be taking interns around on calls and building up their excitement for the industry, only time will tell.
