During the beginning of the week I traveled down to our 26 acre facility in Cincinnati and was lucky enough to observe the company conduct an environmental, health and safety audit first hand. One thing that is extremely important, especially in this industry, is protecting the environment as well as ensuring the health and safety of employees. Univar takes this very seriously, and analyzes compliance in all aspects during these audits. I was able to meet the regional and district safety team as well as the staff that run this branch, and I learned a great deal about what Univar means to them as well as how they view their roles in the company.
Towards the end of the week I was able to meet with our district quality manager here in Cleveland and learn about Univar’s quality management process. The sheer amount of work that needs to be done to sort, analyze, correct and follow up with any quality issue in our district is immense, but it allows for the company to take an active role in ensuring customer satisfaction. After all, our customers drive our business, and making sure their needs are met and issues dealt with is arguably one of the most important aspects of Univar’s operations.
Now, I am not one for long car rides, but the major point I can take away from this week is how much I learned just by traveling and visiting our Cincinnati facility. Not only did it allow me to network face to face with different employees but it also allowed me to actively participate and observe how that location operates and meets the needs of a completely different set of customers in a very different area. I am looking forward to taking what I have learned thus far and going out in the field with our sales team for the next two weeks. Wish me luck!
