My first week with Univar can be summed up in three words: overwhelming, exciting and eye-opening. From the first day I walked through the doors of the Strongsville distribution center, I was caught in a whirlwind. From meeting all of the employees and my program mentor, touring the Cleveland facilities, going through new hire training, being introduced to the ins and outs of Univar, and starting my intern project, I have had a lot on my plate. However, one thing is for certain; I am enjoying every second of it.
In just these few short days I have learned just how diverse, complicated and exciting chemistry distribution is. There are so many facets to this large, global company that I did not realize existed. Not only do we distribute, we research and test groundbreaking chemicals, figure out who needs them, source them, sell them, transport them and ensure continual consumer satisfaction from producer to consumer. I try to absorb everything I can each day, but one thing I am finding out is that no matter how long you have worked for Univar, you learn something new every day you step through those doors.
Next week I travel to Cincinnati to observe one of our large facilities there and understand its operations, and then finish it off learning about environmental health and safety as well as quality management. From there, I spring into sales and continue my rotation throughout the company. I am more excited to see what I can do and learn each day that passes, so make sure to stick around and share in my experiences. One thing is for certain, there is so much more to being an intern than what you think.
