Excelling in Excel…Not Quite!

Written by:

As you might be able to tell from the title of my post, I’ve been using Excel a TON so far in my job!  At least 85% of most of my work days consist of analyzing and constructing spreadsheets!  That being said, the skills learned in my freshmen CS&E class that I struggled through are slowly, but surely coming back to use.  I’ll admit, there are some points throughout my work week when my brain literally feels like it has gone through some sort of intense Cross-Fit training…but it’s nice to know that at least some of the things we learn in college are directly put to use in the work world! If anyone has taken Professor Unnava’s Marketing Research class, I’m almost positive I’ll be using some of the things we learned in there too.  I feel like a nerd, but I am excited to run those cross-tab analyses.

Ah!  For a little tip I learned this past week, one of my bosses said that an important thing to remember when creating Excel sheets is to make sure it’s printer-friendly!  We share a drive on the computer at work, so you never know who might need/want access to a report.  Making the reports reader-friendly when they are printed is simply a kind gesture!

This past week at work, I got to travel with one of the Zone Managers to a dealership close to San Diego for a day.  This will be the first of many trips with a Zone Manager.  Ford really wants interns to get a feel for what they would be doing if they got hired, and the majority of entry-level employees get hired as a Zone Manager.

I also went to happy hour for some drinks and appetizers at a restaurant close to work with my two bosses.  It’s nice to talk to them outside of the work-environment and talk about “real” things, not to mention try out some of the cuisine out here!

To end my post, here’s a quote I saw on Lauren Conrad’s blog that I love–for anyone that’s stressing out there…

“The cure for anything is salt water – sweat, tears, or the sea.” Isak Dinesen

Also, here’s picture of a Shake Shack along PCH!  Sun, sand, beach & burgers…YUM—did I mention I’ve been asked if I was a vegetarian multiple times out here?  I guess there are a lot of vegetarians here!!  Being from the Midwest…a burger just hits the spot sometimes :)

Sarah, I really enjoyed your post! I am so jealous that you are out there in California, I have always wanted to take a trip out there. I have a friend, named Sara (without the h), who is from LA. She has shown me pictures and I must say it is beautiful! Your puns about excel definitely made me laugh, but I hope your hard work in CS&E paid off! I also appreciate the tip about being printer friendly. I have started my internship in Columbus and I assume I will be using excel in the near future!

P.S. Can you recommend any burger joints in Cali if I were to make the trip?

Woah Sarah! LA?! That must be so glamorous. You sound like the ultimate Cali-girl so I bet you’re enjoying your time. I did a bunch of excel work too, word. Go on and enjoy that weather but come back to O-H shortly now, you hear?

Just read an article in a national newsletter that 60% of interns spend their time analyzing, problem-solving and project management. Your experience sounds like it fits right in!

  4. Sarah Teutsch says:

Definitely fits right in! It was a little intimidating at first, but I think I’m getting the hang of it (and actually like it!) now! :)
