I can’t believe summer is here and I’m finally starting my internship with KPMG! I just wrapped up my third year at Fisher as a student in the Accounting Honors program and am looking forward to starting the MAcc (Master of Accounting) program in the fall. Before then, I will spend nine weeks in Federal Tax Services at KPMG, one of the “Big Four” public accounting firms. Many accounting students intern and start their careers with one of the Big Four – PwC, Deloitte, and E&Y being the other three – in positions such as audit, risk assurance, tax or consulting. My position this summer is in the Columbus office, so I’m lucky to be able to stay on campus and work in the Arena District.
I’m excited for this internship, because it will be an entirely new experience different from the corporate accounting position I’ve had for the past year. I just wrapped up my internship with Worthington Industries, where I completed journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, and other monthly and quarterly accounting tasks. Tax is a whole different area, where I will see economic and government issues come together with business decision making. My hope is that I will gain experience preparing different types of tax returns – from corporations to individuals – and tax planning for a range of clients. At the end of these nine weeks, I’ll know if tax is the right path in accounting for me!
For those of you reading this and other blogs this summer, feel free to comment with any questions you have about interning in Columbus, public accounting positions, etc, and I’d be happy to provide some feedback. The next time you hear from me, it’ll be from Orlando at our national training next week. KPMG, here I come!
