My Fisher Internship
Informational Interviews and other resources

This summer has been flying by (a little too quickly, I might add)!! As I continue my internship at the hospital, I have also been researching different career paths to follow in marketing. I’ve been researching online and have also been talking with people who have experience in the field of marketing. I know this isn’t directly related to my current internship, but I do think this is something beneficial for students to do, so I’m going to share one of these experiences with you. I had the privilege of meeting with a buyer from Kohl’s and conducted an informational interview with her. She’s a recent grad from Ohio State and proved to be really helpful and informative! I was able to learn about what a typical day is like for her in the workplace and also got a lot of advice from her, both professionally and academically. I asked a TON of questions. Some examples include:

  • How does your company compare to others?
  • What personal attributes are successful in your field?
  • What do you wish someone had told you when you first started your career?

For those of you who have never conducted an informational interview, I would definitely recommend that you do. During my sophomore year at OSU I took Business Administration 501.01 with Sarah Hill, who works at the Office of Career Management. The class is worth two credit hours and was really informative! If you haven’t had the opportunity to take this class, I would encourage anyone enrolled at fisher to do so, especially if you are a sophomore or junior. I learned a lot about how to search for internships/full time positions, how to succeed in QUIC and regular interviews, proper etiquette with interviewers/bosses, how to conduct an informational interview and types of questions to ask, and much more! The class also enlightened students about all the resources they have available to them at Ohio State and Fisher, including the Office of Career Management, Fisher Connect, and Ask an Alum. By accessing Ask an Alum, students can contact OSU alum from Fisher and talk with them about their career, where they live after life at OSU, ask for advice, etc. It’s a great resource that Fisher has and I have taken advantage of it a few times!

Side note: I was able to spend a few days at the beach last week with all of my siblings and their spouses, parents, cousins, aunts/uncles, grandparents, etc. (I have a HUGE family and love the chaos that comes with it).  I wasn’t planning on going anywhere this summer, but it was so nice to unwind and spend time with my family! My siblings and I are spread out across the US, so I don’t get to see them often.  Here’s a picture of my nephew, Ramsey. I love to show him off! :)

My adorable nephew, Ramsey!
