Columbus has a very vibrant, up-and-coming, and creative population. It should come as no surprise that there has been some incredible innovations that have started here. A favorite local artistic creation is Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams. Founded in 2002 by Jeni Britton Bauer, Jeni’s scoops out tasty flavors year-round such as Salty Caramel, The Buckeye State, and Ndali Estate Vanilla Bean. Honoring seasonality, they serve unique flavors during certain times of the year like Sweet Cream Biscuits & Peach Jam, Roasted Strawberry Buttermilk, Sweet Potato with Torched Marshmallows, and Middle West Whiskey Eggnog. In recent years, the business has expanded to other locations such as Cleveland, Nashville, Atlanta, Chicago, Charleston, and New York. Through its growth, Jeni’s has stayed true to its artisan roots and values.
What sets Jeni’s apart is its commitment to finding the best ingredients- whether that’s using milk from cows that graze grass on a family farm less than 200 miles from Columbus or locating the finest Fair-Trade-Certified vanilla beans in Uganda. After a bite of one of Jeni’s creations, all other ice creams pale in comparison. You can just taste the exquisite quality and truly savor the special treat.
Jeni’s is really something special, and so when I heard that its CEO, John Lowe, was going to speak at Fisher, I knew I’d have to attend. Delta Sigma Pi, a business fraternity, sponsored the event and opened it up to all Fisher students. It was a well-attended and excellent presentation. John was relatable, a great story-teller, and used his talk as an opportunity to reflect on his background, mistakes, and aha moments. He was good friends with Jeni before he was asked to take on the role of CEO of the ice cream company, and he attributes all of the creative success of Jeni’s to her. What John brings to the table is business acumen and persuasive speaking skills. During his presentation, he emitted a true entrepreneurial and competitive spirit. He wants the world to know that Jeni’s is the real deal in the world of ice cream, and they dream of expanding their scoop shops and wholesale business so more people can taste Jeni’s true artisan creations.
When I came to Columbus for the first time, lots of people recommended me this brand of ice cream. Jeni’s, which is a local brand in Columbus, is an awesome place to enjoy ice cream and hang out with friends. I want to recommend it to you.
There are 3 Jeni’s shops in Columbus, and the one that is closest to OSU is at 714 N. High Street, Columbus, OH 43215. You cannot miss it because there is a reproduction of a distinguished printing, American Gothic by Grant Wood, on the wall outside.
Are you excited about the ice cream? If so, then you won’t be disappointed. There are numerous sorts of hand-made ice creams with different flavors. The most popular one, which is also my favorite, is salty caramel. It gives a mouth-watering salty sweet balance. It seems that every customer who comes to this shop will have a different preference. And there are many other splendid flavors, such as, beet cake with black walnuts, brown butter almond brittle, cherry lambic sorbet, gravel road, lemon & blueberry frozen yogurt, the buckeye state, etc. Are you still undecided? Can you decide which one to have? The shop assistant will give you little spoons of every flavor you want to try.
If you are starving, there are ice cream sandwiches as well for you to consume. The sandwiches are all in the most popular flavors with delicious cookies outside.
The popular Jeni’s shop is often crowed with her fans. On weekends’ nights, especially, there is always a long queue, and people even line up outside Jeni’s shop. So it is better to come here on weekdays or early on weekends.
When you walk into Jeni’s Ice Cream, it really is no wonder that the name is officially Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream. Splendid is not a word often used in everyday English language. I mean, when was the last time you heard someone say, “I had a splendid time at lunch with you today!” It seems a little overkill, right? Well, the company’s choice adjective to describe their ice creams is neither exaggerated nor pompous. It is not only excellent, but inventive. Just give goat cheese and with cognac fig sauce a try. If you think that sounds awful, you’d be awfully incorrect. They’ll even let you test their precious flavors, if you don’t believe me. My favorite time of year to visit is in the fall, when the seasonal flavors include heirloom pumpkin, and you can take in the sights while strolling the Short North. And in the Short North, there never seems to be a dull moment (seriously, I watched a young woman sitting in the middle of the street under an illuminated Short North arch, posing – in her wedding dress!). During Gallery Hop on Saturdays, Jeni’s draws an extended line out its door of patrons willing to wait. I was rather excited to walk right in on Friday. Though I had come in thinking I’d give one of the other flavors a chance, I ended up leaving with my old favorite, salty caramel. I’m usually the type to like ice cream with a lot of stuff in it — nuts, candy, etc — but this is so different. Each taste is worthy of being savored. And you won’t even get annoyed if the ice cream melts a little. You’ll eat every last bit.
Jeni’s is well known for their commitment to buying local. They’re participating in Local Foods Week, October 2nd through October 8th, which includes several opportunities to enjoy Jeni’s ice cream. Or you could just stop in at one of their shops in Short North, North Market, Grandview, Dublin, or Bexley. I guarantee that splendid will enter your vocabulary.
