I Love Food - Tip Top Cafe Edition
Guten Tag. The past couple weeks have been pretty hectic, between coursework, FPS, the internal case competition, and my attempt at trying to have a life other than work. But, today I have for you a restaurant review - Tip Top Kitchen & Cocktails.
From the outside, there really isn't much to the Tip Top Kitchen. The lack of windows makes it sort of look like a prison...but once inside, it's clearly a bar with dynamite food. The interior reminds me of a different age - prohibition - and an old haunt of mine, Harry's Chocolate Shop. Complete with exposed clay brick walls (with obvious remnants of previous renovations and years of abuse), an authentic punched tin ceiling, and that dark dingy atmosphere, I fell in love with the place. I just have a thing for dives like this.
A friend joined me for brunch, which was nothing short of fantastic. I got the Blue Ribbon Breakfast skillet for reasons I will explain momentarily:
Blue Ribbon Breakfast Skillet $9
Tip Top’s famous pot roast dredged in ancho chile and mixed with red potatoes. Served with two scrambled eggs, cheese sauce, sour cream and green onions on top.
Other than obviously sounding delicious, Blue Ribbon caught my eye, as I am a fan of Pabst Blue Ribbon, which of late has had a resurgence in popularity (waiting for the HBR case on that turnaround - I'm sure it's coming). I mentioned to the waitress that the skillet reminded me of PBR, and she recommended having a "cowbell" with my meal. New to me, she explained it as half PBR & half Bloody Mary. I tried it; unlike her, I would not recommend it to anyone else...
All in all, a fine little dive bar/grill in downtown Columbus. Good company never hurts either.
