Apples to Apples!
A couple of my classmates hosted a game night this past Friday for the people in our program. It was a blast and a great way to get to know each other better. We had 12 people in all, including a couple of my classmates’ significant others. We also all contributed to the junk food potluck. I brought Starburst, Star Crunches, and a bottle of wine. I was going for convenience and apparently a star theme. Some of my other classmates were more creative. They brought homemade salsa, chips, and teriyaki chicken wings. All of the treats were delicious!
Once everyone had the chance to enjoy the food and beverages we sat down in a very large circle and played Apples to Apples. I had never played before, but it was a lot of fun! A card is selected with an adjective and then the rest of the group chooses a card that has a word that relates to the adjective from their hand. You can choose a serious word or you can be a bit silly. For example, one person selected the adjective “feminine” and one of our classmates put a card down that said, “Tom Cruise.”
Getting together for a game night was a blast and it was a great way to get to know the more laid back, less stressed side of everyone. I also think it was a great language exercise for some of our international students. A couple of the students in the program who are from China had their English dictionary out and asked the meaning of the words when they needed help. Some of the explanations were hilarious. I mean really, how do you describe a cult? The description of a cult on the card said, “They seem nice.” That is a bit confusing!
Game night was a huge success and I hope that we do more activities like this in the future. I’m definitely looking forward to the Halloween night this Friday with the GHRA!
