Chores
On a perfect day in Amsterdam, the wind softly blows carrying a light snowfall of petals lazily toward the canals as the sound of bicycle bells chirp away throughout the streets. Sidewalk cafes are filled with friends and couples quietly chatting while sipping prosecco and snacking on bread and olives. On a such a day, it is hard to focus on work instead of take a walk in the park.Yesterday, however, was far from perfect. Rain spewed from dreary gray clouds, winds tore at umbrellas, and bikers stoically rode in ponchos and rain gear along the roads. That weather made it easy to focus on work, both for the project and for housekeeping.
Our longterm rental through AirBnB is not unlike actually owning or renting a house. We wash dishes, sweep floors, keep the common areas tidy. One cleaning challenge has been sharing a small washing unit among six individuals. Our washing unit is a combination washer/dryer meaning each load takes several hours.
On a recent load, it was noticed that a distinguishable odor was produced during the dry cycle. Given the abnormal scent, I took it upon myself to complete my first European Laundry repair. After researching the model, tearing it apart, and cleaning the key areas. I restored it to non-smelling condition.
Next challenge: de-icing the freezer & cleaning the mold from the water drain area.
Though International work may sound luxurious and conjure images of tuxedos and Maseratis, the reality is that the mundane elements of daily life exist across boarders.
