New IELTS minimum score

Attention international applicants:

For those of you that plan to take the IELTS exam in place of the TOEFL, please note the very recent change to our score requirement.  We have recently lowered the minimum IELTS requirement from a score of 8 to a score of 7.  Thanks to the recommendation of Ha, one of our student ambassadors, and the subsequent analysis and benchmarking that she performed,we concluded that a score of 7 is more appropriately aligned with our minimum IBT TOEFL score of 100.  Hopefully this will be encouraging news for any of our international applicants who may have been concerned about the “unattainable” score we had set previously.

Happy testing!

Unofficial vs. official transcripts

We have been getting a lot of questions about transcripts, so I thought this was an opportune time to clarify what we need from you.

Domestic Applicants (U.S.):

You are required to send two official copies of your transcripts to The Ohio State University.

An official transcript is:

  • A ”physical” transcript that is mailed directly to the Graduate Programs Office from the Registrar of your former or current University.
  • Remember to send transcripts from each and every post secondary institution that you attended.
    • This includes universities attended during high school, study abroad work, and transcripts previously submitted to Ohio State University as part of a freshman or undergraduate application.
  • You do not need to submit a transcript for any coursework you have completed at The Ohio State University.

International Applicants:

You are required to send in two official copies of your transcripts in order to receive an official and final admissions decision from The Ohio State University.  The Fisher College of Business will review an unofficial copy of your transcript and make a recommended admission decision.  You must provide the official copies of your transcripts prior to enrolling at Ohio State/Fisher if you receive a provisional admission decision.

You do not need to submit a transcript for any coursework you have completed at The Ohio State University.

What constitutes an unofficial copy of your transcripts?

  • A PAPER copy of your transcripts sent to us via surface mail.
  • Scanned or emailed copies of transcripts cannot be used for a preliminary review of the application.

A note to international applicants regarding TOEFL

We receive inquiries from international applicants who are concerned about their TOEFL or IELTS scores. The Fisher MBA program prefers the following:

  • An overall score of at least 100 on the Internet-based TOEFL exam  **or**
  • A band score of at least 7.5 on the IELTS.

The MBA admissions committee will still consider your application if you score below these minimum recommendations. However, the committee will review the TOEFL or IELTS scores when determining your abilities in English.  Strong English skills are critical to success in our program, not only in the classroom but also with employment recruiting. Therefore, if your scores are well below our suggested minimums, it would be to your advantage to retake the exam.

PLEASE NOTE: Be sure your name, as listed on your TOEFL and/or IELTS score reports matches exactly your name as listed on the application. If your name does not match exactly on the TOEFL/IELTS and your application, the chances of your application being significantly delayed are increased greatly.

TOEFL Speak Score: We prefer to see a score of 20 or higher on the speak section of the TOEFL.  Applicants who are offered admission to the program with a TOEFL speak score of 23 or lower will be selected for evaluation for free supplemental English instruction upon arrival at Fisher.
