FINAL SCORE

81 60
(Nick Kellogg had a very rare
    "triple double" vs. WCH: double-
    digit totals in points (22),
    rebounds (13 -- one offensive
    and twelve defensive), and
assists (11), a feat never before
achieved in the 17 years that
    Dean Margeson has served as
    statistician for the DHS boys
    teams -- Kellogg's accomplish-
ment was all the more remark-
    able because foul trouble limited
his playing time in the game to
    21 minutes and 53 seconds)

DeSales boys coming out ready to play basketball

February 1, 2010
By SETH SHANER

After playing five games between Jan. 15-23, the DeSales boys basketball team was able to kick back and concentrate on just one opponent last week.

The Stallions (14-2, 6-0 Central Catholic League) picked up an 81-60 home win over Worthington Christian Friday, Jan. 29.

The game was DeSales' first since a 65-62 double overtime triumph over Wilmington at the Ohio Scholastic Play-by-Play Classic at Ohio State's Value City Arena Jan. 23.

Senior Nick Kellogg led the way against Worthington Christian, totaling 22 points.

Seniors Aaron Selmek (17), Adam Griffin (13) and Chi Chi Ariguzo (11), along with junior Clinton James (11), were also in double figures.

"Any time we play a league opponent, it's always a big game," Kellogg said. "We just approach it like it's a big game. It's one of our last home games and we came out ready to play."

The contest was somewhat close (44-36 in favor of DeSales) until the Stallions doubled up the Warriors 24-12 in the third quarter.

"Our story has kind of been that we've been known to allow teams to play with us in the first half," Kellogg said. "We've really tried to get out to some better starts of late, but you have to give (Worthington Christian) credit, they came out ready to play.

"In the third quarter, we came out fast and got some good scores."

DeSales came into the season with just a few players with tangible varsity experience, but yet they're undefeated (12-0) in the state of Ohio.

"We just talked about that," Kellogg explained. "Coach (Blair Albright) hadn't quite expected us to be where we're at right now. I think we've answered the bell. The five seniors have stepped up and really tried to bring the younger guys along.

"Adam, myself and Chi Chi are really the only three who have played varsity minutes before this year. Us three, and Patrick (Levy) and Aaron have tried to lead the way."

While the start has been impressive, Kellogg also knows he and his teammates can't rest on their laurels if they hope to make another deep tournament run. DeSales advanced to the state final four three of the past four seasons.

"We always talk about staying hungry," he said. "We have to be hungry and continue to get better. We don't want to be complacent. Every day counts and we're always trying to get better as a team.

"We're happy with how we've played of late, but we can't let off the gas."

The Stallions were scheduled to go to Ready Tuesday, Feb. 2, and host Hartley Friday, Feb. 5, at 8 p.m.

The season is to come to an end with a trip to St. Charles Feb. 12, and a bout with Watterson at Otterbein Feb. 19, both tip-offs at 8 p.m.
