The Stallions, however, didn't give up, and despite giving up 36 points to Garfield Heights guard Carl Jones, they persevered and overcame an early 16-4 deficit to win 73-68.
Jones, a St. Joseph's, Pa. signee, scored his team's first 11 points, and teammate Trey Lewis made all three of his three-point attempts, but DeSales (9-1, 3-0 Central Catholic League) kept to its game plan of making the bigger Bulldogs take tough shots.
"I think when you're playing a team as good as Garfield Heights, you can't expect to come into the game and not go through some tough times," DeSales coach Blair Albright said.
"What I'm most proud about with our performance is the
toughness that we showed. (Jones) is a terrific guard who can do so
many things. We had to call a timeout in the first quarter and
obviously things weren't going our way, but we tried to keep it in
perspective. They had made some really difficult shots...and we knew
we'd have to give up some of that."
DeSales senior Ike
Ariguzo, a 6-foot, 7-inch post player, remained undeterred when it
came to battling up to three players two inches taller and scored a
team-high 23 points.
"Before the game, we talked about really
getting into their bodies and drawing fouls," Ariguzo said. "That's
really what I was focusing on in the first half, when I got almost
all my points at the free-throw line."
The senior was 9-of-12
from the charity stripe in the game.
The Stallions didn't
take their first lead until junior Nick Kellogg scored with 4:31 to
go in the third quarter, but it looked like they had expended all
their energy just to get the lead as the 'Dogs promptly went on an
8-0 run.
"We just had to regroup and key in on what we do,
and that's play great defense," Ariguzo explained. "We told
ourselves all we had to do was play great defense to win the game,
so every man took it upon himself to lock down on their
guy."
An Ariguzo three-pointer and eight points from senior
Nick Goff kept DeSales in it through the end of the third and a
seesaw battle ensued before the Stallions could gain
control.
Goff scored 18 points and Kellogg 12 to join Ariguzo
in double figures.
The win over the Bulldogs, probably the
best team the Stallions have played to this point, could serve as a
landmark victory.
"We hadn't had a real marquee win to this
point in the season," Albright explained. "We've played how we would
have been expected to play, but this was an opportunity to come in
against a very good program and a very good team, and show the
direction and potential that our team has.
"I think it was
certainly a very monumental win. It's something we can take from and
learn from and continue to build from. I told the guys in the locker
room that this is a starting point for us."
The Stallions
also picked up a 53-48 CCL win at home over Hartley Friday, Jan.
9.
Kellogg tallied 23 points, Ariguzo 15 and Goff 11 in the
decision.
DeSales is to travel to St. Charles Friday, Jan.
16, at 8 p.m. before going to Cleveland Benedictine Saturday, Jan.
17.
The Bengals, who were also at the Classic at OSU,
defeated Canal Winchester 64-52. Ohio State signee Cameron Wright
scored 17 points against the Indians.
